WASHINGTON A number of 2008 presidential contenders appear to be inching closer to making their first official steps as candidates.
Republicans Tennessee Sen. Bill Frist, Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel, Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback, New York Gov. George Pataki and Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee are all in preparatory stages.
Democrats Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack, Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh, Delaware Sen. Joe Biden and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama are also being watched carefully for suggestions they are making moves in the White House's direction.
None officially has announced they are running, but either they or those close to them are saying they soon will be announcing whether they will toss their hats into the ring.
This comes on the heels of other recent announcements, including Republican Sen. John McCain, who last week filed papers with the Federal Election Commission to begin an exploratory committee; former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who also has started an exploratory committee and Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who is raising money at a fast clip, and announced over the weekend that he will announce his intentions sometime after the holidays.
Presidential candidates make their intentions official by actually filing with the FEC as presidential candidates, but they also can file paperwork to declare an exploratory committee, which is a type of fundraising organization recognized by the FEC, but not an official candidacy. A number of types of fundraising are considered official "contributions," and can be used to support exploratory or "testing the waters" activities.

I am rapidly running out of any chances at all to vote in the 08 elections with all the fools that are throwing their hats into the ring.
Which party is Hagel running with? Since we are already behind a couple senators can't we just kick him across the aisle where he belongs?
seems like a lot more than seven dwarves this time. The field really needs Kucinich so it will have a troll as well.
Most Americans will never elect someone named Barack HUSSEIN Obama to be president. Won't happen.
Pataki has no chance either, he certainly drove NY into the drink, so shouldn't waste his time.
The Donner Party.
What a dog show.........
This is all the friggin' GOP can offer us for 2008?
Will the ferret (Gary Bauer) run again?
Pataki had an impressive stable of Iowa conservatives lined up pre midterm election. Now they're jumping ship.
Presidential politics in Iowa is a bit different than in other states. Most generally, the contenders would all have people on the ground recruiting endorsements from Legislators, tying down key volunteers and staff.
Pataki's camp is bleeding profusely tonite.
OTOH we have seen absolutely nothing out of Hagel. And McLaim has the former State Party Chair as his head Dog.
It's amazing with Pataki, the guy completely helps to ruin the NYS Republican party, can't even pull the trigger on relieving corrupt Alan Hevesi of the Comptroller job (leaving it to incoming Eliot Spitzer instead), and then thinks that he's got a shot at being POTUS ???
Man, talk about delusional!
Truly a painful line up, isn't it?
Frist !? Hagel !? What have these guys been smoking ? This makes clear just how far out of touch they are with their own base. Not another dime until these bast@rds somehow redeem themselves for their limp wristed and back stabbing squandering of the President's mandate.
"Reporting for Duty!"
What happened to Duncan Hunter? didn't he announce earlier in the week?
It cannot compare with the selection of GOP nimrods to date as potential candidates for Prez. We might as well have a running of the bullsh**ters and get the goring over with.
Chuck Hagel will have his hands full getting re-elected as Senator. He shouldn't stand a prayer of getting the presidential nomination.
