"Two-thirds of Americans favor a guest-worker program with a path to citizenship," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

Let's see. Now what can "AMERICANS" mean? Well, the term covers all people on the continents of North America, South America, and Central America. So, if these people polled the North and Central American illegal border-jumpers, it's a sure bet they'd be in favor of fleecing United States citizens...

Come here legally, or don't come here at all. If you are currently here illegaly, you are an invader and should be treated as such.

I'm with the 71% who want congress to do more about illegal immigration, too. Secure the borders. But the idea that we can kick out everyone here who hasn't gone through channels is unrealistic. Until I see the immigration hawks lining up to pick tomatoes in the fields around my central California hometown, I think some accommodation needs to be made for some of the immigrants who are already here.

Why is it that the leaders of the country don't seem to want to embrace any option other than amnesty?

Gawd, I'm sick of that lie!

When they changed the name from attrition theory to attrition strategy, it became a viable alternative?

The guest worker program can be 100% seperate from the illegal alien issue.

A guest worker should be just that, ONLY a guest who goes home.

We can set up a guest worker program without regard to the illegals.

The illegals can be dealt with seperatly. McCain proposes an earned amnesty program.

Come on now.

After almost six years in office, Bush along with a majority controlled GOP Congress has never attempted to secure the border, never attempted to enforce exisitng employer sanctions and never fought for legislation that would halt govt welfare handouts to illegals.

The borders remain wide open, employers continue to hire illegals with impunity and illegals are still getting major welfare support from the govt.

Bush wants amnesty for illegals and a direct path to citizenship. After six years, the truth stands out for all to see.

Oh goody. Another thread where intelligent people will engage with the lying, spinning, deceitful OBL'ers.

And, some will respond to the OBL'ers and they will know how it feels to

As such, it is worthless; just another poll designed to get a certain result, and when it gets those desired results, the media uses it to push its far-left views on immigration reform.

Freepers, of all people, should know not to trust a 'poll' where the questions are not available, only the results as interpreted by a know leftist 'news' entity.

The results of pretty much any poll are useless without the exact wording of the questions asked.

I'm fine with a guest-worker program, and even expanding the number of slots available for permanent legal residency/citizenship... but NOT for illegals. These programs should ONLY be available to people who have respected our nation's laws and sovereignty. Any person who has chosen to illegally be in the U.S. already should be permanently disqualified. Any illegal caught here should be fingerprinted and forever barred from any kind of legal residency. Only those who go through the proper channels should be allowed to legally reside in this country.

Indeed; for all we know, they asked "Should undocumented workers be allowed to earn U.S. citizenship, or should child molesters be employed as daycare workers?"

If you enact the right policies, they'll leave on their own. Branson, Mo and Hazelton, Pa is proving that. For the illegals: you don't have to go home but you can't stay here.

BTTT

Let's all hope that our next president believes in enforcement of existing immigration laws. No more open borders politicians!

Kinda like the false dichotomy presented by OBLers: 'shall we drag 20 million kicking & screaming illegals out of the country (at enormous cost), or shall we enact a sensible, non-amnesty guest worker program with path to citizenship?"

NOT!!

The attrition method is quite logical. Start with mass round-ups of gang bangers, drug dealers and other big-time criminals. Add pressure by enfocing the law and fining employers, beginning with the most blatant-- Tyson and Purdue Chicken, not Karl's Roofing Service. Add a substantial border fence to make entry more difficult.

Step-up enforcement against those using phony IDs and illegally claiming rights which belong to American citizens-- public benefits, voting and the like.

As certain milestones are met, issue, at each increment, a limited number of green cards to the most productive of the illegals . . . based on demonstated willingness to stay off the government teat, pay taxes, cooperate with law enfocement and learn English.

Those who might otherwise qualify but are over the mandated maximum for the increment could be issued an extension of say, 6 months, and get a provisional green card.

As demonstrated enforcement continues, provisional green cards could be upgraded or extended. The freeloaders, gangbangers and most undesireable element would even self-deport once enfocement action appeared serious.

In short, there would have to be a stick (demonstated enforcement action and progress) to get the carrot (additional green cards and extensions of the program).

And one more thing-- the ethnic lobby would not like this, but cooperation of their country of origin would be one of the factors considered in who gets preference for green cards. Support us, cooperate in extraditing criminals for crimes committed and encourage the people you send to behave as guests . . . move to the front of the line. Tepid support, no cooperation and encourage the people you send to behave as colonists and freeloaders . . . move to the back of the line.
