I confess I'm disgusted by this story, but there is some room for explanation, maybe.
It says she was drinking AND on medication, and it's possible that she was taking something that shouldn't have been combined with alcohol. Not everyone reads the label or the fine print when medications are prescribed, unfortunately. Maybe it said not to drive or operate machinery.
We had a local police chief here in the metro of Minnesota pull this similar stunt:crashed his car, left his gun in the car, walked to a friend's house, then claimed he was just 'going for help',but didn't notify all the people from his department looking for him for hours.
I think THIS is her:

You mean the condition of her being bombed out of her mind before getting behind the wheel of a car?
Let me get this straight......the accident killed her own son........
She cared so little for her son that she drove him around while she was drunk. Sure, he was 29 and should have known better than to get into the car with her--who knows, maybe he was drunk as well. Doesn't let her off the hook for driving drunk.
Must be this guy missed the news when that car went off the bridge and the swimmer walked away.
The swimmer wasn't the parent.... of Mary Jo anyway...
"But Whalawitsa showed up about 11 a.m. She told investigators she'd been driving the car, and that she'd been drinking and was taking medication, according to a police report."
What? She hasn't checked herself into rehab yet? Yeesh! Follow the d@mn script, Lady!
"It says she was drinking AND on medication, and it's possible that she was taking something that shouldn't have been combined with alcohol. Not everyone reads the label or the fine print when medications are prescribed, unfortunately. Maybe it said not to drive or operate machinery."
That was Patrick Kennedy's excuse when he ran his car into the barrier, "late for a vote", bombed out of his skull.
Oh my goodness! What an awful story.
Well, we know what kind of guy Kennedy is, and we know he has had several accidents. I'm inclined to suspend judgment on this woman, terrible as it appears, because I don't know anything about her. Certainly it's possible that she was seriously drunk. But it's possible that she just had drank moderately but it interacted with her prescription drugs, and then that the accident stunned her into behaving irrationally. Not likely, maybe, but possible.
