ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (CNN) -- About 500 people were evacuated from the New Mexico State Fairgrounds Expo as a precaution Saturday evening after low levels of radiation were detected, police said.

A Geiger counter registered the presence of radiation after two objects were discovered at the 236-acre fairgrounds in the heart of Albuquerque, said Lt. Juan Martinez, a spokesman for New Mexico state police.

Sounds innocent enough--- nuclear material for medical purposes & plumbing found under a car in "what appeared" to be a pipe bomb & paint can...

WTF?!?!

ROP trial run?

Got too close to florescent lights or smoke alarms.

Sounds like a terror attack averted. Radioactive pipe bomb at a fairground. That is an expected scenario.

Obviously someone had a reason to be checking for radiation under parked vehicles......

Isn't New Mexico one of the states that we've tested bombs in? Maybe the level they recorded is the norm for that part of the state.

I thought there were plenty of old uranium mines out there too.

here is a snip-"A Geiger counter registered the presence of radiation after two objects were discovered at the 236-acre fairgrounds".

The bombs were marked "nuclear" and "Cobalt", after Cobalt-57

Background radiation would most likely be accounted for. This is in central Albuquerque. The Trinity site is quite a ways south east of Albuquerque.

This is concerning because the fairgrounds are just down the street from the national labs and Air Force base.

Ground zero for our nuclear tests was White Sands Missile range, NM.

Only one atomic bomb has ever been tested in the atmosphere in New Mexico and that was the Trinity Test on what is now the White Sands Missile Range.

I've been out to Trinity and the radiation levels are at or slightly above background norms.

The question is, what kind of radiation was detected, alpha, beta or gamma and in what ratio?

factoid: A granite countertop is detectabe with a Geiger counter.

"The bombs were marked "nuclear" and "Cobalt", after Cobalt-57"

Why do you call the objects 'bombs'?

"The objects, one appearing to be a pipe bomb and another that appeared to be a paint can". Factoid- most paint cans do not show much more than background. I have never personally checked a pipe bomb with a Geiger counter.
