Things Just Got Worse From champs to chumps [The GOP Debacle Alert]
NRO ^ | Nov. 14, 2006 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 11/14/2006 5:27:27 AM PST by conservativecorner

In just two short years, Republicans have gone from being champs to being chumps. In 2004, the Republicans were voted control of all three branches of the federal government and most state governorships. Today, they are left wondering what hit them.

Now that Democrats are in control on Capitol Hill, President Bush has expressed hopes of getting a bipartisan immigration bill. The only bipartisan bill that can get past a Democratic Congress is an amnesty bill, which can be a down payment on another Republican defeat in 2008.

If the people in the White House do not understand how outraged their supporters were at this year’s attempt to pass an amnesty bill for illegals — virtually guaranteeing that even more millions will come — then it is hard to know what message they got from the Republicans’ recent debacle at the polls.

Immigration was not the only issue but it was part of the more general issue of betrayal, which includes the Republicans’ runaway spending, among other things.

If the Republican leaders have learned nothing from their recent defeat, perhaps some Republican supporters will. Some of the most baffling e-mails received from conservative Republicans before the election were those which said that they were so disillusioned and/or disgusted with the Bush administration that they were going to vote for Democrats in order to send a message.

This is the kind of emotional self-indulgence common among liberals but apparently some conservatives have now also come to see elections as occasions to vent their feelings rather than to choose among existing options for the future of the country.

Sending a message may have its benefits but — as with all benefits — the question must be asked: “At what cost?”

On the Left, it is acceptable to say things like “open space” or “alternative fuels” without any thought of the cost. What is new is finding the same spirit now flourishing among some conservatives as well.

As events unfold over time, perhaps those conservatives will reconsider whether it was worth it to “send a message” to President Bush at the cost of making Senator Pat Leahy chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Senator Leahy’s control of that committee virtually guarantees that the only kind of federal judges who can get confirmed are the kind who are likely to spend decades on the bench creating new “rights” for criminals, illegal aliens, and terrorists.

Was that price even considered by conservatives who indulged their anger instead of weighing alternatives? It is easy to say “the parties are no different” or “things couldn’t get any worse.”

People have said that before — and have been proved wrong before. Before the election of 1860, abolitionists said it would make no difference whether Lincoln or a Democrat was elected. But millions of people were freed because that prediction was wrong.

In Germany, the Weimar Republic was nobody’s idea of an ideal government and, in the desperate days of the Great Depression, no doubt many German voters thought that nothing could be worse. But they discovered during the dozen years of Nazi rule just how much worse things could be.

Congressional Republicans don’t have enough votes to stop any legislation or confirm any judges, especially since the Democrats stick together, unlike Republicans. Moreover, with a Republican president saying that he wants both a bipartisan immigration bill and a bipartisan minimum-wage bill, there is not even a hope of a veto.

But the fact that you cannot stop something does not mean that you have to become an accomplice. There is no reason why a majority of Republican senators should ever again vote to confirm another extreme activist judge like Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Nor is there any reason why congressional Republicans should again outrage their supporters by voting for another illegal-immigration amnesty bill. Not unless they want to be chumps again in 2008.

Even aside from moral issues, betrayal has had a bad political track record under both the elder President Bush (“No new taxes”) and the younger President Bush (“comprehensive immigration reform”). Congressional Republicans will have to face the voters again in 2008, even if President Bush does not.

And now it looks like Mel Martinez will be chairing the RNC. We need a pitbull not a poodle, been there, done that, look at the results.

Another good one from Sowell. Especially the following:

There has been some talk that even the Dems aren't stupid. They realize many Dems won seats by moving right of the Republicans on immigration.

Dems may realize that, if they push for amnesty, they will lose in 08.

GW may find the Dem Congress not as easy as he had hoped to get his amnesty passed. He and Tony Snow's glee at having a Congress they could work with to get 'comprehensive immigration' passed may have been premature.

I don't like doom and gloom predictions. They maybe entirely accurate, but this isn't the time to roll over and quite. Demonrats have an uncanny ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Up until now, Republicans have done everything in their power to keep that from happening. If only Republicans would get out of their way and let them do what they do best, Republicans would again have control of all three branches.

We need a pitbull not a poodle

The only pitbull is GW with his jaws locked on amnesty for illegals. He has latched on to that just won't let go, even when it cost his party the House and the Senate.

If he continues to push amnesty, it would easily cost the GOP the White House in 08 and make them the minority party for decades.

But he just won't let go.

The RINOs voted for Socialist Democrats to make a point? Here's a novel idea, instead of voting against your own party start planning months before the elections so you can vote for a platform all of you can agree!! No wonder the RINO party is so dysfunctional! It's time for another party to fill the void.

What I find somewhat amusing is that everytime someone brought up illegal immigration before the election, we were accused of "there you go again" and hijacking threads, etc. Now, sure enough, it's the one thing that W is going to try to get done the next two years. This issue was waiting for the GOP to capitalize on and they blew it.

Even when the Pubs had control of Congress they kowtowed to every up and down vote the dems denied rather than fight. It was almost a comedy. Look whos laughing now.

The three branches of our federal government are the Executive, Legislative and the Judiciary. The Judiciary is not "supposed" to be controlled by either party.

Yesterday I started up an old laptop. Just out of curiosity, I looked at some of the old emails that were still on it. There were just a few, dated in the mid 2001 time-frame.

One email was in regard to a statement radio talk-show host, Rusty Humphries, made. He said that he had a memo from the RNC (2001) telling candidates to avoid any mention of illegal immigration in their campaigns.

Hmmmmm. So, the RNC has been trying to bury the topic for 6 years. And this election (2006), it came back to bite them in the rear.

I wonder if some of these people who "taught the Republicans a lesson" are beginning to understand the possible consequences of this stupidity? Republicans are out of power in the House and Senate. President Bush may sign an amnesty. Those votes will go to the Democrats. The Republican party could become a permanent minority party to the point that it may as well not exist. I guess my question is: "How stupid can some people be?"

<< Dems may realize that, if they push for amnesty, they will lose in 08. >>

But with 12-20 million new Rat voters (just for starters - 40-50 million longer term under the type of amnesty bill the Senate proposed) they will win in '12, '14, '16, '18 ...

That question should be addressed to the political leaders, not to the voters. The voters have little option -- vote for, vote against, go fishing.

It is the GOP leadership that squandered their majority position by pandering, by caving, by opening the checkbook and funding various bridges to nowhere, by allowing corruption to permeate, etc.

This one is on the GOP leadership. They have 2 years for a major course correction, or they forfeit leadership for decades.

I'm 100% with you. It's interesting how they can choose to not vote Republican as some kind of lesson, but they certainly expect us to be there for them once they decide it's time to vote again.
