Mexico City Approves Gay Civil Unions

Mexico City's assembly on Thursday voted for the first time in the country's history to legally recognize gay civil unions, a measure that will provide same-sex couples with benefits similar to those of married couples. The mayor was expected to sign the measure into law.

The bill, which does not approve gay marriage, allows same-sex couples to register their union with civil authorities, granting them inheritance and pension rights, as well as other social benefits. Lawmakers were still finalizing the details.

Heterosexual couples who are not legally married can also be registered under the legislation.

The bill was severely criticized by the Catholic Church and conservative civil groups. It passed by a vote of 43-17, with all the opposition coming from the National Action Party of President Vicente Fox and president-elect Felipe Calderon.

The party is known for its opposition to abortion and its support for traditional families.

Mexico City is a federal district with its own legislature, and the law will apply only to residents of the capital, with a population of 8.7 million. This is the first time any state legislature has approved such a law anywhere in Mexico.

Perhaps they have some common sense. It's not marriage, after all, but it is a relationship that deserves some kind of legal recognition.

By baptism. Mexico is now about 25% Protestant, at least.

Remember that Massachusetts and New Jersey are two of the most Catholic states in the U.S., yet are also the most pro-Gay.

Following that logic I guess I don't consider myself to really be 'pro-gun', as much as I am 'pro-choice of personal defense devices'.

So will we see a reverse effect, and American liberals will flock to Mexico City to get away from our oppressive government?

Sad, but at least it was not forced on them by unelected judges.

Mexico City Approves Gay Civil Unions

The fine print of the approval order requires that every gay civil union ceremony feature a Mariachi band.

Suitable punishment, seems to me...

It is marriage. It's just called something different and for now may have slightly fewer benefits. But itis exactly marriage. In the states this would be followed by a lawsuit demanding ALL the benefits. Name is optional.

The relationship deserves nothing.

I am Catholic, and I am from Massachusetts. I don't support the homosexual agenda, which includes same sex marriage - legal here in Massachusetts, nor the latest push of "trans gender" rights. Their behavior is disgusting, and I don't want them to spread their ideas to my children in the public schools.

All that said, I am not in any position to deny that they have a right to petition the government for a redress of grievances, per the first amendment. Perhaps they will never settle for civil unions, or they are bent on turning our institutions upside down. I am not comfortable even with that, but what is the best I can expect, realistically? All of you in other parts of the country will be facing this issue as courts move in (as in NJ) and push aside traditional marriage.
