RNC Chief Sees Three Lessons in GOP Losses By Susan Jones CNSNews.com Senior Editor November 08, 2006

(CNSNews.com) - Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman called himself disappointed on a number of counts, following the Democratic victories in key House and Senate races.

"I think the American people clearly sent a message, and it's a message we need to understand and we need to listen to, and we as Republicans need to follow," Mehlman said Wednesday morning in a Fox News interview.

Mehlman said Republicans must now do three things - first and foremost, rededicating themselves to their "conservative, reform principles."

Second, he said Republicans must "try to work where we can on a bipartisan basis with Democrats," while maintaining conservative principles.

And finally, he said Republicans must lose the taint of corruption: "We need to remember, people who serve...at any level are people that ought to be about public policy and public service."

"If we can focus on those three things...ultimately we will be stronger and will be able to serve the public better and will have learned and grown from it."

Most of the GOP did nothing of the latter.

Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman

Good of him to admit *ignoring* conservatives but too late to do anything about it. I think Trump said what needs to be said best: YOU'RE FIRED!

Oh brother. If Republicans focus on working more closely with dems we will lose in '08. Republicans need to define sharp differences with democrats not become them.

I could start Bush bashing (GOP bashing)right now but I won't.

There is so much wrong with todays GOP (the way I see it) that it will take a new crop of real conservatives to fix things.

Anyway, I know a lot of you love bush but I do not so I will not post anymore about this out of respect.

Yes, and that is a BIG part of why many conservatives, fed up with Repubs, put their votes on libs -- a horrid situation.

Conservatives have only been repeating this message incessantly for six years. Glad to see they finally are paying attention, now that its too late.

The first thing Bush and Rummy have to do is FIX the mess in Iraq... toot sweet (as they say).

Kick some butt, stop playing patsie with this new Iraqi PM who just wants to cut a deal with Sadr, and either get tough and WIN or give him an ultimatum and leave.

The Iraq mess is the 1000 pound elephant in the room that the GOP keeps tapdancing around. We did not lose this election because of government spending or core conservative principles being abandoned.

We lost it because an increasing percentage of voters are fed up with no progress in Iraq and daily stories of American soldiers and Iraqi civilians being killed by suicide bombers and IEDs.

The Economy is great... there has been no followup domestic terror attack in 5 years... so how did we get whupped???

Iraq and the failure of the GOP leadership to have any answer to the Dems taunts on the war and corruption.

I agree. 1 & 3 are good, but why in the hell did it take this kick in the b@lls to understand that?

Has anyone said this yet: "Rove, you magnificent idiot."

""try to work where we can on a bipartisan basis with Democrats,"

Republicans in the house now have no choice on that matter. If the Senate falls, it will be the same thing.

He still doesn't get it. People voted against Republicans yesterday because they are angry at Bush, probably about Iraq, and that is a function of what they perceive as either happening or not happening there. They have been fed a steady stream of bad news and that carried the day.

Mehlman and the rest of the monica lewinski republicans are the problem. This "can't we all just get along" attitude has ruined the republican party. Throw them out!

They need to work with us. Maybe I'm out of my mind thinking the President will step up and use his veto power to get a conservative agenda passed over the next two years. And maybe the 49 republicans in the Senate will wimp out, and not filibuster when needed. But the tools are in place even after this defeat to advance the conservative agenda and win the war on terror. We need to keep on The President and GOP leaders eveyday. Instead of ignoring us I want them to go deaf from hearing us.
