A PARIS court today starts to examine an appeal by Rachid Ramda, an Algerian convicted for his association with Islamic extremists who carried out bomb attacks against the Paris metro system in 1995. Ramda, 36, is challenging the verdict by a lower court that sentenced him to ten years in prison for allegedly fraternising with criminals involved in a terrorist activity.
Extradited in December from Britain, where he was detained for ten years before his French trial, he has protested his innocence and expressed sympathy for the victims of the blasts. His lawyers say that Ramdas period in British custody should have been taken into account for sentencing.
Regardless of the result of the appeal, Ramda is likely to remain behind bars pending another trial focusing on his alleged participation in the attacks. In that matter, he faces life imprisonment. (AFP)
