Massive Ammonia Leak Evacuates Part Of E. Boston

(CBS4) EAST BOSTON -- The Environmental Protection Agency is on the scene of a chemical leak in East Boston on Monday. They are assessing an ammonia leak from an 800 pound tank at the Channel Fish Processing Company on East Eagle Street.

Officials say a faulty valve appears to be the cause of the massive leak. It is not clear how much of the chemical leaked, the Boston Fire Department said.

One person was taken to the hospital as a precaution. According to the fire department, the victim was not a worker at the plant or a public safety worker. The person lives a few blocks away from the plant and walked up to emergency crews.

The plant and surrounding homes were evacuated. Fire crews spent part of the evening knocking on doors of homes and businesses suggesting people leave.

Fire officials said windy weather was making it difficult to contain the leak. "We have a large leak from a tank… we're getting very high concentrations of ammonia gas. The wind's playing havoc with it – we're having trouble pinpointing where it's going from time to time," said Dep. Chief Steve Dunbar.

According to reports, fire crews are now beginning to pack up and leave the scene.

At the height of the leak, residents in Chelsea were calling in to complain of a strong odor, and drivers in the area were complaining of stinging and watery eyes.

The first thing I thought of when I read that headline was that John Kerry decomposed in his spider-hole.

Probably the first time they have ever had their sinuses cleared. If they had worked in an old ammonia refrigeration plant, they would think nothing about it. Those old plants had leaks galore. Most of the time what is called a leak is nothing more than a seep. Ammonia has a strong odor, but since it is NH3, it goes back into the atmosphere very quickly.

"Massive" leak.

Not.

less than 200 gallons total.

Lots of water on it will fix it. And the area will be really clean.
