France Yields Control over Subway From the desk of The Brussels Journal on Mon, 2006-11-06 05:40
A quote from the Augean Stables weblog, 5 November 2006
100 youths from the difficult neighborhoods [...] attacked and robbed of their personal possessions passengers on the Metro inside Paris to the point that the police had to evacuate the station Chateau-Rouge, a site already on some peoples dangerous sites in Paris list.
This incident, which had people fleeing the subway in panic, [...] is not unprecedented. [...] [T]he French MSM [apart from Le Parisien] avoid any mention of the incident. Thus the French slowly but surely let some of the Metro stops and lines become lost territories, taken over by gangs whose information network is excellent, and the losers dont even know its happening.

A spokesman for France's tourism industry had this to say: Come see the Eiffel Tower while you still can!

Been to many years removed from french. I'm not sure posting a babelfish translation would make much sense. I could post it if you'd like.

excerpt from Babelfish:
"They were between 300 and 400. They started to throw projectiles towards our car before converging towards public transport "tells a police officer in faction this evening L) Ney boulevard (19th). Immediately in alarm, the police force escorts surbondés buses PC and answers a first emergency call at the subway station Marcadet-Fishmongers. "When we arrived, the shocked travellers left the mouth of subway while running. It is there that 4 victims said to us that they had been just made strip by more than one hundreds of young people "tells this police officer of the company of security. The station Castle-Red entirely evacuated. In the station where the oar was immobilized, the police officers inspect the coaches and discover various objects which strew the ground. "There was of all: portable telephones, pass Navigo, numerical walkmans, one even found a hammer "reveals this civil servant. But at the time of this round of prospection, the terrorized victims do not recognize their attackers. The full oar at short-nap cloth-edge can thus set out again. The flights with violence start again. The alarm is not long in resounding and the subway is immobilized again between Marcadet-Poissoniers and Castle-Red. "We then decided to make leave very world of the oar and to proceed to palpations on people who appeared suspect to us. On one of it, we found the identity papers of a victim "tells this police officer. With the exit of this procedure, 12 young people whose minors will be finally challenged. The police force then chooses to entirely evacuate the station and to frame the remainder of the band, left free, which can join the station of North to foot.

Thanks for the warning. My sympathies. It sounds like open warfare in some areas from the press releases, or close to it anyway.

The page of le Parisien is available only by paid subscription; this is a photocopy with photo of the incident.
I've given it my best shot at translation.
PARIS SUBWAY: A HUNDRED VANDALS ATTACK
The scene:Overcrowded tracks where attacks are more numerous, passengers running from the Metro totally panicked and finally, the police struggling to evacuate a station.
Tuesday night, around 9pm hundreds of "Yoots" attacked passengers on the 4 and 12 lines between the stations Marcadet-Poissonniers and Château Rouge, robbing the passengers of all their personal effects: handbags,MP3 players, cellphones.
The shocking incident was only made public by ( the newspaper) le Parisien. An incredible media blackout.

It's the very news media blackout that tells you that things are bad.
The news types fear that if the truth gets out that the situation will become uncontrollable.
