As a rule of thumb, if you don't clean the toilet, or pay someone to (such as when you visit a public restroom whose cleaning is paid for by your purchases or taxes) then have a seat. It's the polite thing to do.

Oh, and toilets have lids for a reason.

"As a rule of thumb... "

Who's thumb? Not my thumb, nor my rule.

"Oh, and toilets have lids for a reason."

Yeah, to give you something to stand on when you have to change the overhead light.

Let me get this straight...you're suggesting that I "have a seat" in a public restroom when I don't need to?

No thanks.

Oh, and toilets have lids for a reason.

To keep the dog from drinking out of the toilet? My wife told me the same thing, and I pointed out that toilet seats had hinges on them for a reason too.

We had this discussion after she had a late-night accident. I told her "if you get your ass stuck in the toilet because you forgot to look before you sat down, blame yourself, not me."
