Overfishing May Harm Seafood Population (Fear Alert)

WASHINGTON (AP) - Clambakes, crabcakes, swordfish steaks and even humble fish sticks could be little more than a fond memory in a few decades. If current trends of overfishing and pollution continue, the populations of just about all seafood face collapse by 2048, a team of ecologists and economists warns in a report in Friday's issue of the journal Science.

"Whether we looked at tide pools or studies over the entire world's ocean, we saw the same picture emerging. In losing species we lose the productivity and stability of entire ecosystems," said the lead author Boris Worm of Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

"I was shocked and disturbed by how consistent these trends are - beyond anything we suspected," Worm said.

While the study focused on the oceans, concerns have been expressed by ecologists about threats to fish in the Great Lakes and other lakes, rivers and freshwaters, too.

Worm and an international team spent four years analyzing 32 controlled experiments, other studies from 48 marine protected areas and global catch data from the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization's database of all fish and invertebrates worldwide from 1950 to 2003.

I remember being warned about "dead oceans" when I was a school kid back in the '70's. What old news story are they going to resurrect next as breaking news--eating less and excercising more leads to weight loss?

Seems like a lot of fish I'm eating these days is "farm" raised. As ocean stocks dwindle, fish farming may well take up the slack. Besides whales are making a comeback and maybe we can start eating them.

And the Dems accuse BUSH of leading by fear! But is there any political movement more based on appeals to fear than the environmental/global warming movement?

Too greasy.

Don't we all die of global warming and muslims overrunning the west before then?

Do muslims eat fish? Maybe their overthrow of the west will save the fish.

Maybe we need to get viagra in the oceans and help those fish with EDF.

I am sure there is a grant here somewhere.

Don't fish also help keep the water "clean" ?
The cod fishery on the Grand Banks has been in a nosedive for years, ditto North Sea Herring. Both due to overfishing.
I like to catch them, just look at them and sometimes eat them but it'd be a tragedy if they went away.

WE NEED TO SPEED UP GLOBAL WARMING NOW IF WE ARE TO AVERT THIS CRISIS!!!

Carbon Dioxide is food for blue-green algae, which in turn is food for fish. Only by MASSIVELY INCREASING the amount of Carbon Dioxide and also by WARMING the oceans, can the sea replace the fish faster than they are being harvested.

WE MUST TAKE ACTION NOW!!! If we wait too long before we get serious about warming the planet, IT MAY BE TOO LATE!!!

This is an issue that hope gets looked at in a more comprehensive way after the elections. Its a touchy business full of emotion thats for sure. However often fisheries are not often on peoples radar.

THe dead zone in the gulf is becoming a serious problem.

It seems as though the fish don't know about this problem in Lousiana. After the "rest in fishing" brought by Katrina our fishing population has florished! We are even catching red fish in Lake Pontchartrain!

We're doomed I say, DOOMED!/s
