Bus driver who flipped off Bush fights for job

Thursday, November 2, 2006

P-I STAFF AND NEWS SERVICES

An Issaquah School District bus driver fired for flipping off President Bush while on the clock claims she was wrongfully terminated.

The 43-year-old bus driver's union has filed a grievance on her behalf, according to union representative Larry Meeks. He declined to say more about the grievance.

The complaint came from Congressman Dave Reichert, who was traveling with Bush in June to a Medina fundraiser. The motorcade passed several school buses on a freeway ramp and students waved at the president, who waved back. Bush was enjoying himself until the bus driver's finger gesture caught his eye, according to the King County Journal.

Reichert recently told the story to a veterans' group in Orting, the Journal reported.

The driver was fired in September after an investigation.

School district spokeswoman Sara Niegowski told the Journal that the gesture was "not at all appropriate modeling for students on the bus."

I guess Congressman Reichert must have "misinterpreted" her "botched" gesture.

LOL. Since when is that the standard? I predict reinstatement with back pay. Maybe even a promotion. Afterall, we are talking about the public schools.

I would hope they discipline (not necessarily fire, unless it is clearly stated in the terms of employment) ANY bus driver who makes an obscene gesture in front of students.

I notice there is no mention of the driver's name. I just love how people hide behind their lawyers in this day and age. It is disgusting. In the old days the person would be shamed and treated according to their actions. Now there is all this protection.

Shakespeare was spot on in what he said about lawyers. I would love to see this person's name in print.

Exactly. This has nothing to do with who she flipped off. She should not flip anyone off, period.

Touche. This really isn't about the president; a school bus driver shouldn't be flipping off ANYBODY. But firing might be too harsh, maybe a suspension would have been sufficient.

Actions have consequences.

A concept this 43-year-old child never grasped, and thus their Democrat leanings.

The 43-year-old bus driver's union has filed a grievance on her behalf...

If you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't you get stuck driving a bus and hoping the union can save your job after you flipped off the President.

---This is what Kerry meant to say!

...discipline...ANY bus driver who makes an obscene gesture

Agreed. Had the motorcade been for Slick Willie, a lot of us would have considered that the proper hand salute to render.

Anybody 43 years old still using the juvenile gesture of the middle finger should be kept away from young children. Same goes for those who think swear words are normal conversation. The driver got what she deserved.

Fortunately you must not have to drive daily in South Florida. : )
