Threat Matrix: November 2006

Posted on 11/01/2006 8:20:24 PM PST by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
The Price of Victory
-Full Story-

The "bombshell" revelation from last April's National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), which was leaked to the New York Times in September, was that the war in Iraq had resulted in more terrorism, not less. As reported by United Press International's Claude Salhani, "Did we really need 16 intelligence agencies to tell us that? Ten minutes of watching the newscast of your choice, from Al-Jazeera to Fox News, would be enough to convince most observers." But the key question is why the war has provoked the global Jihad.

One answer has to be the influence in the Arab world of the America-
hating network Al-Jazeera
. The AIM DVD on "Terror Television" shows film footage of captured terrorists saying they came to Iraq to kill Americans because of the words and images on Al-Jazeera.

U.S. Embassy Santo Domingo issued the following Warden Message on November 16, 2006:

The U.S. Embassy advises U.S. citizens in the Dominican Republic that a transportation strike is scheduled to take place November 16-17 throughout the country. The strike is being organized by Central Nacional de Transportistas Unificados (CNTU) one of the largest transportation unions in the country. The planned strike will likely affect access to services of public transportation throughout Santo Domingo, including taxi service.

American citizens are advised to avoid demonstrations that may be held in support or protest of labor disputes, and are also encouraged to avoid any large crowds during active demonstrations. We wish to remind U.S. citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. U.S. citizens are urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any protests. Since the timing and routes of marches and demonstrations are always subject to change, U.S. citizens should monitor local media sources for new developments.

"Jihad's femmes fatales"

Women terrorists real threat, sez NYPD

BY ROBERT F. MOORE
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "That's not a pregnant belly - that's a bomb.
The NYPD is warning business owners to be on the lookout for female jihadists who can hide explosives by faking pregnancy or sweet-talk their way past security officers.

"The threat posed by women is real, and it can't be overlooked," Rachel Weiner, an NYPD intelligence specialist, said at a security conference yesterday.

The warning was not in response to a threat against any specific targets in the city, but a general caveat for private security in light of the radicalization of women in other parts of the world."

Soy Ingredient in Chocolate Making Source of Hershey Contamination
Josh Pringle
Thursday, November 16, 2006

Hershey Canada says it is working to reopen its plant in Smiths Falls.

The plant has been closed since fears of salmonella contamination surfaced last week.

The company now says a soy ingredient used in chocolate making was the source of the contamination.

Two dozen chocolate bars and candies were voluntarily recalled last weekend because of the scare.

Hershey says soy lecithin was the contaminant, as it tested positive for salmonella.

A spokeswoman says according to the supplier, this ingredient was shipped exclusively to the Smiths Falls plant, though Hershey has not revealed the supplier's identity.

There were no illnesses reported.

The company has temporarily laid off most of its employees in Smiths Falls due to the production shut down.

Inside the Jihad

Snip: Nasiri says French intelligence sent him to London, to work with the British, spying on extremist clerics. But no one, he says, was paying attention to what he was reporting. Disgusted, he says, he quit. And it is this failure to listen, Nasiri tells us, is what prompted him to bypass intelligence agencies and write his book.

Iraqi Forces Capture Terrorist Cell Leader, Seize Weapons

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Nov. 17, 2006 – Iraqi security forces captured a terrorist cell leader, found a large roadside bomb before it could be used, and seized a large weapons cache over the last two days, military officials in Baghdad reported today.
Special Iraqi Security Forces, with coalition advisors, captured the leader of a terrorist cell responsible for attacks on Iraqi civilians and security forces during a raid in the Arab A’Jabur area, south of Baghdad, Nov. 15.

The terrorist cell is linked to al Qaeda in Iraq, and is responsible for kidnappings, murder, home invasions, rape, illegal storage of arms and explosives used in attacks, and planting improvised explosive devices and car bombs, officials said.

Iraqi forces conducted a helicopter air assault and detained the terrorist. Operations caused minor damage, officials said, but there were no Iraqi force or coalition force casualties. An Iraqi civilian suffered minor cuts and abrasions during the operation and was treated by coalition force medics.

Yesterday, special Iraqi forces seized a large improvised explosive device and weapons cache inside a mosque during a raid targeting roadside bombers near the Baghdad International Airport.

Coalition troops saw several persons placing an IED, but were unable to capture them before they fled into a nearby mosque compound. Coalition forces cordoned the compound while an Iraqi force with coalition advisors entered the compound, consisting of a mosque and two houses, to look for the men.

Iraqi forces were unable to locate the individuals, but uncovered multiple hidden storage areas containing a large cache of IEDs, weapons and explosives. Weapons and related material were found in the houses, the compound area and in the mosque itself, officials said.

Iraqi forces found two vehicles prepared for use as car bombs, as well as pre-made IEDs and a suicide vest.
Continued search of the compound revealed several anti-tank mines, electrical initiation systems for IEDs, a mortar system and ammunition, several assault rifles and ammunition, several machine guns, pistols and a rocket-propelled-grenade launcher and ammunition.

Coalition forces destroyed the two vehicles, along with a moped found to have protruding wiring and munitions hidden within it. An anti-tank mine with anti-handling mechanisms was also destroyed on-site. Coalition forces confiscated the remaining weapons and material.

No IEDs or munitions were destroyed within the mosque itself, officials emphasized, adding that no damage was done to the mosque and that there were no Iraqi civilian, Iraqi forces or coalition forces casualties.

French UN troops prepare guns against Israeli jets in Lebanon
AFP ^ | November 17, 2006 | Nayla Razzouk

Posted on 11/17/2006 2:04:32 PM PST by West Coast Conservative

French UN anti-aircraft batteries have taken "preparatory steps" to respond to Israeli jets violating Lebanese airspace, despite global criticism of such incursions.

"The anti-aircraft unit of the (French) battalion took initial preparatory steps to respond to these actions," Milos Strugar, spokesman for the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) told AFP on Friday.

He said "UNIFIL observed and reported 14 Israeli air violations this morning, on November 17, 2006, and 11 of these violations occurred in the area of operation of the French battalion with UNIFIL."

UNIFIL Force Commander General Alain Pellegrini "strongly protested to the Israeli authorities and asked them to cease these actions which are unacceptable and in violation of Resolution 1701," the spokesman said.

Strugar said the French battalion took action to respond "in accordance with UNIFIL rules of engagements and UN Security Council Resolution 1701."

"They stipulate that in implementing their mandate, all UNIFIL troops may exercise the inherent right of self-defence and take all necessary action to protect UN personnel, facilities, installations and equipment," he said.

Strugar said the overflights took place in the central sector of southern Lebanon where the multinational UNIFIL force was boosted to more than 9,000 troops after the Israeli-Hezbollah war in July and August.

"In one instance, two Israeli F15 jets flew over the area at low altitude and high speed," he said.

"At the same time, two Israeli reconnaissance RC12 aircraft were circling above the headquarters of the French battalion located in Jabal Marun," east of the southern port city of Tyre, he said.

When asked about Friday's overflights, an Israeli military spokesman in Jerusalem said only: "We don't elaborate on aerial activity".

On October 31, the French UNIFIL forces came within seconds of firing at Israeli aircraft when they overflew UN positions in southern Lebanon, sparking an official complaint from Paris against the overflights.

But French Defence Minister Michele Alliot-Marie said on November 13 that Israeli warplanes had stopped buzzing French troops in southern Lebanon, following two close incidents in the area.

Ignoring harsh international criticism, Israel has vowed to continue the overflights, claiming they were needed to monitor alleged arms smuggling by the Shiite militant group Hezbollah.
