Threat Matrix: November 2006

Posted on 11/01/2006 8:20:24 PM PST by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
The Price of Victory
-Full Story-

The "bombshell" revelation from last April's National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), which was leaked to the New York Times in September, was that the war in Iraq had resulted in more terrorism, not less. As reported by United Press International's Claude Salhani, "Did we really need 16 intelligence agencies to tell us that? Ten minutes of watching the newscast of your choice, from Al-Jazeera to Fox News, would be enough to convince most observers." But the key question is why the war has provoked the global Jihad.

One answer has to be the influence in the Arab world of the America-
hating network Al-Jazeera
. The AIM DVD on "Terror Television" shows film footage of captured terrorists saying they came to Iraq to kill Americans because of the words and images on Al-Jazeera.

UK: Boost for anti-terror laws after warning
The Times ^ | November 11, 2006 | Philip Webster and Michael Evans

Posted on 11/11/2006 3:57:19 AM PST by MadIvan

MINISTERS will signal next week the Government’s readiness to adopt new anti-terrorism powers after the head of MI5 issued a warning about the rising threat of British al-Qaeda terrorists.

Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller’s statement that her 2,800 staff were trying to counter 30 significant terrorist plots and monitor the activities of 1,600 suspects is expected to lead to extra funds being provided by the Treasury.

Patrick Mercer, the Tory homeland security spokesman, said that the security and intelligence agencies were working at “full stretch” and needed 50 per cent more resources.

Dame Eliza said on Thursday that MI5 and the police had to make tough daily choices on whose activities should be monitiored and that some of the decisions might not be the right ones.

John Reid, the Home Secretary, has a slot for a counter-terrorism measure in the Queen’s Speech, which will open Parliament next week.

Tony Blair agreed yesterday with Dame Eliza’s concern that young Muslims were being groomed to be suicide bombers. He said that Britain had to thwart those who wanted to “entice young people into something wicked and violent but utterly futile”.

Hershey's Investigating Outside Additive
Jason McIntyre
Saturday, November 11, 2006

The chocolate flow has stopped for the time being in Smiths Falls.

In a statement from the company's head office in Pennsylvania, Hershey's spokesman John Long says during a quality check on Thursday, staff found "an externally-sourced ingredient that did not meet our standards."

There's no word on whether any affected product has reached the marketplace.

The factory, employing 500, will remain closed until further notice while the firm works with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

Thank you fanfan for the info.

If you have any updates, could you please post them?

I found a longer article here, but it still was rather vague.

The Denver Post and 9News
Article Last Updated:11/11/2006 12:20:22 PM MST

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "At least one person is confirmed dead after a natural gas fire erupted from a major pipeline Saturday morning in Wyoming, sending flames hundreds of feet in the air.

"I understand there was somebody doing some sort of work there with a bulldozer and the bulldozer breached the pipeline," said Sheriff Jim Alderden of the Larimer County Sheriff's Department in northern Colorado.
The identity of the victim was not immediately released.

Colorado and Wyoming law enforcement and fire crews are responding to the blaze, which could be seen from miles away. The fire started in an isolated, unpopulated area, on a 26,000 acre ranch."

Australia's recent comments reacting to political events
Jerusalem News Network ^

Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia, as the government targeted radicals in a bid to headoff potential terror attacks.

A day after a group of mainstream Muslim leaders pledged loyalty to Australia and her Queen at a special meeting with Prime Minister John Howard, he and his Ministers made it clear that extremists would face a crackdown.

Chocolate Plant Shut Down
Production has been shut down at the Hershey Chocolate Factory in Smiths Falls, and the company isn’t saying when it will start up again.

Reading a statement from head office in Hershey, Pennsylvania, company spokesman John Long says that during one of several quality checks yesterday "an externally-sourced ingredient that did not meet our standards" was detected.

Long would not elaborate, but went on to say that production will remain shut down while the full extent of the problem is determined, and steps to correct it are taken.

He would not say whether any product that has already been shipped might have been affected.

Well thank you fan-fan.

(P.S. I sure wouldn't want an "externally-sourced ingredient" in my food.
I'm still wondering what this ingredient might be.)

PROTECTING THE U.S. AGAINST TERROR
In the Trenches with Our Troops

11/11/06

You know that FBI agents, intel analysts, and bomb techs work 24/7 within our nation’s borders to prevent terrorist attacks. But what you may not know is this: we do the same overseas, working right alongside American military forces in war zones around the globe.

It’s all part of our post 9/11 mission to use the full sweep of our investigative and intelligence capabilities to prevent terrorist attacks, wherever U.S. citizens or interests are threatened.

Dr. Louis Blazy
In a Veterans Day speech in the Virginia suburbs on Saturday, Dr. Louis Blazy—one of our top information technology execs and a veteran himself—described this new world where we work shoulder-to-shoulder with military personnel on the front lines to fight terror.

“The FBI is in the trenches in Afghanistan and Iraq, ducking gunfire, securing villages, analyzing improvised explosive devices, helping wounded soldiers, and dismantling terrorist groups,” he said in prepared remarks.

Our primary form of support comes in the form of intelligence. Dr. Blazy—who’s responsible for operating a global information technology infrastructure in the FBI to support our counterterrorism, intelligence, and crime-fighting missions—explained why.

“[A] terrorist safe house in Afghanistan might contain documents that discuss a potential terrorist operation that targets U.S. citizens or interests worldwide. It might contain latent fingerprints, incriminating photos or electronic media, or other suspicious items. One tiny scrap of evidence—a fingerprint, a fuse, a computer disk, a cell phone—could be the key to preventing another terrorist attack,” he said.

“As the veterans here can attest, in the midst of a sensitive military operation, you don’t always have the luxury of time. … Once our soldiers kick in the door of that safe house, they need to gather information and process evidence quickly. That is why it is so valuable to have FBI personnel working alongside them.”

Dr. Blazy—who comes from a military family and has a son currently serving as a fighter pilot in the U.S. Navy—also praised the more than 48 million American veterans past and present. “We [here today] honor every man and woman who has guarded a post, led a mission, or tended a wounded soldier. We honor every private and pilot, every airman and ensign, every sergeant and Seal.”

And so do all of us in the FBI. We’re proud to have so many veterans and reservists as part of our family…and to support our extended family in the armed forces every day.

"DHIREN BAROT: THE CONTINUING AL QAEDA STRIPTEASE
INTERNATIONAL TERRORISM MONITOR--PAPER NO.150"
by B. Raman

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "42. There need be no doubt that Al Qaeda and the International Islamic Front (IIF) continue to pose a serious threat to peace and security. There also need be no doubt that the jihadi locusts of the Al Qaeda brand continue to breed in the jihadi swamps of Pakistan and spread devastation across the world. There is no reason to question the validity of the case against Barot. But public perception that the so-called war against Al Qaeda is sought to be converted into a never-ending strip-tease to serve ulterior political purposes could undermine the credibility of the intelligence and counter-terrorism agencies and ultimately play into the hands of the terrorists."
