Former Democratic Gov. Edmund "Pat" Brown dismissed his Republican challenger in the 1966 gubernatorial race as a Hollywood interloper who had no business trying to become California's chief executive.
"He's an actor," he said of Ronald Reagan. "You know who shot Abraham Lincoln don't you?"
On Monday, the 40th anniversary of Reagan's landslide gubernatorial election, the first step on his road to the White House, was celebrated at his presidential library. The attendee attracting the most attention was another actor-turned-politician, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Schwarzenegger avoided discussing the campaign, focusing instead on Reagan's legacy. He also praised Nancy Reagan, the 85-year-old former first lady, during the luncheon tribute.
"Forty years may have passed, Mrs. Reagan, but you are still the first lady in our hearts," Schwarzenegger said.
After a brief speech embracing Ronald Reagan's legacy, Schwarzenegger turned to Mrs. Reagan and said: "I have studied your husband. I promise you I will try to live up to his example."
Other attendees included former Republican Gov. Pete Wilson, billionaire oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens, Merv Griffin and a long list of Republican politicians.

"You know, education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, uh, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq." Download the 10 sec audio here (mp3)
Sounds like Angelides has gone into the "He Can't Make It Any Worse Than It Already Is?" mode.
Marty, Pat Brown (Edmund G. Senior) was the guy who said that. Jerry Brown (Edmund G. Junior) is Moonbeam. You know how it is. Ronald Reagan had "Skipper" (a.k.a. little Ron) to deal with. Pat had Jerry.
Edmund Brown is still alive?
Pat died ten years ago. Unfortunately, Jerry's still around.
The role of gentlemanliness and humor in a era of vitriol and rancor. The courage and willingness to compromise in an atmosphere of increasing polarization. The preeminence of foresight, beyond immediate political gain, to craft lasting policy.
As a notable Irishman once said:
"The polished delivery of an emotionally appealing message is a wonderful thing. What a crime to waste it on a liberal."
...or did he?

He's toast.
