Newspapers are more intereted in endorsing winners than good candidates.
In 1970, I distinctly remember, the Westchester-Rockland Newspapers, run by liberal Gannett, endorsed the liberal Republican Governor Nelson Rockefeller, the Democrat comptroller Arthur Levitt, Attorney General Louis B. Lefkowitz (Republican-Liberal), and...James L. Buckey, the Conservative Party candidate for U.S. Senate. All of them won, but other than trying to be on the winning side, I can't figure out what the editorial board could have been thinking.
