Schwarzenegger Story Gets Another Rewrite
LAT ^ | Oct. 21, 2006 | Peter Nicholas

His approval rating is up to 56%, according to the latest Los Angeles Times poll, a rise of nearly 20 percentage points in one year.

His advisors say they still worry when he speaks in public, wondering if he'll blurt out something that offends a constituency or torpedoes a policy position his administration spent months crafting.

Every year the California Chamber of Commerce, the state's leading business lobbying group, puts out a list of what it calls "job killer bills" — legislation it wants defeated. Of 11 such bills that passed the Legislature and made it to the governor's desk this year, he vetoed nine, or 82%.

Schwarzenegger backed four measures that his allies placed on the November 2005 ballot: He wanted to curb state spending, revamp the way the state draws voting districts, make it tougher for teachers to get tenure and bar unions from making campaign contributions without permission from members. The agenda wasn't even his own. It had been cobbled together by the Chamber of Commerce, anti-tax forces and conservative leaders on the fringes of the governor's political circle.

I still think it's too bad that conservatives didn't support Arnold's special election propositions. But I hope even those will turn out to vote for Arnold and all Republicans in this election.

Arnold is a fascinating man no matter what your politics.

He is earning a place as a memorable governor in the largest most unmanageable state in the union.

It is almost surreal that the democrat, with a name that we all recognize, Phil Angelides doesn't stand a chance against our republican candidate.

I think we California conservatives will vote for him and kind of be happy about it, at least he doesn't need our help desperately, like so many of our favorites around the country.

A long, 5 page article (2400+ words) covering a lot of ground. Fabian sums it up:
"He's been a very reliable partner in advancing a very strong Democratic agenda," said Fabian Nuñez, the Democratic speaker of the Assembly. "It's the ultimate irony."
In other news today from the LA Times (covering his Santa Ana campaigning on Saturday):
Speaking to reporters, Schwarzenegger reiterated his support for immigration reform, advocating a guest worker program and, under specific conditions, driver's licenses for illegal immigrants.

Look at those approval ratings - Arnold is going to be re-elected by a landslide. His personal approval ratings are over 50% for the first time this year.

So? And what did he actually DO?

Arnold put the National Guard on the border, Angelides says he would pull them back.

Arnold vetoed at least twice the driver's license for illegal bill the Dem Legislature passed. Angelides said he'll sign it.

Nunez is correct; Arnold IS a liberal who is advancing for them their agenda far better than any Democrat could. That's why even the Bay Area has come around to backing the Governator.

Calcowgirl has cited chapter and verse the Democrat agenda Arnold signed into law, FO. Why is that "selective postings?" If Angelides had signed them, you'd be critical. But its OK to advance socialism if a Republican promotes it? That's where conservatives differ with Arnold - we don't think its right and we want to see the Governor follow the party platform. Its the kind of fidelity we think is not too much to demand of a Republican Governor!

Neither one of the gubernatorial candidates. That being said, the downticket Republicans deserve the vote of every conservative in November and its important to vote NO to all the borrow and spend and tax increase propositions and YES to parental notification and eminent domain reform.

I can't recommend a vote for either liberal. Even the lesser of two evils is still evil. Still as noted, there are downticket Republicans who do deserve your support and your vote.

ccg did NOT post all the bills Arnold vetoed, starting with the drivers licenses for illegals, the homosexual marriage bill, the homosexual agenda in schools bills, not to mention the universal government run healthcare bill, some anti-gun bills, some anti-business bills and so on.

He vetoed a few bills - not on principled grounds. You keep forgetting Arnold is NOT one of us. Wake up FO; the man you're backing is just a good-looking, well dressed liberal. But that doesn't make him different on substance from his opponent. Which of course is the point.
