Obama’s Project Runway (Dowd Is Back And She Is Doing Better)
New York Times ^ | 21 October 2006 | Maureen Dowd

Posted on 10/21/2006 4:38:12 AM PDT by shrinkermd

"...How will we ever persuade him to give up his modeling gigs in Men’s Vogue, Marie Claire, Vanity Fair and Washington Life? How can we lure the lanky young senator from Illinois out of the glossy celebrity pages and back to gritty substance, away from Annie Leibovitz’s camera and back to Abraham Lincoln’s tradition? He may not want to come back, now that he has mastered that J.F.K. casual glamour pose in shirt sleeves and tie, suit jacket slung over his shoulder, elegant wife and pretty children accessorizing.

The Washington Post’s fashion reporter, Robin Givhan, analyzed the Men’s Vogue spread, with its “touch football” aura: “Obama is pictured in warm light or soft focus. He is pondering, nurturing, working. But never glad-handing, pontificating or fund-raising. The pictures celebrate the idea of Obama rather than the reality of politics.”

She is a great wordsmith and a superior observer of human nature but she is a lousy interpreter. Likes pseudoscience and ad hominems.

Like children she is great at observation but does poorly at interpretation.

Yesterday on Diane Rehm's NPR show Barak was projected as the Second Coming.

If you have the RIGHT attiude listening to NPR can sometimes be a hoot. Their bias is so overt it's actually comical.

No he is not Moslem but his first name is Arabic and I believe his father was a Muslim. Presently, Obama is a Christian.

I don't know why anyone is surprised that the party that gave us Bill Clinton is all gaga over Obama. He's the black Sen. John Edwards.

you are so wrong....she is no "great wordsmith"...her writings blow...most over the past few years have been non-sensical crap....her books both touted on the msm talk shows... did not sell at all....obviously no one wanted to read her crap and no one still does....it is surprising that the ny slimes still has her on board....after all less & less are reading their crap as well...

Don't forget to add "pedantic" to your list of adjectives.

I was about to click the button and read the latest screed from Maureen. Then, I read your comment, and realized it would be a waste of time because her writing is consistently so childish. Elegant, with big words, but still childish. Life's too short.

Thank you for saving some of my time.

His father was an African Muslim but abandoned the family and I don't think had much if anything to do with him. His mother (who brought him up) was an American Protestant, I think of Scandinavian or German extraction. When he first entered politics, I recall that it was said or implied that he was Christian, but lately, he's pretty cagey about what he is. He likes to go in for the big Dem generalities (mushy words about "faith," etc.) that prevent you from really knowing anything about him.

Remember NPR speaking of the young governor from Arkansas some years back?

Is it PC to say, gag me with a spoon?

She is a great wordsmith . . .

She is a puerile wordsmith. She employs a tone of giggly mockery in every article whether it is appropriate to the subject matter or not. It was not without reason that Mark Steyn, a real wordsmith, referred to her as an "elderly schoolgirl." She has no sense of history or proportion and chooses the words an unserious girl would use.

Every time I read about his being a Christian, I remember that he personally wrote and supported a bill in the Illinois legislature that denied any life-saving measures for a baby born following an abortion. No Christian would let a child fighting for its very life just die. What a horror.
