(CNN) -- Chilling scenes from a videotape made by insurgents show the work of snipers in Iraq, targeting and killing American troops, taking them down with a single bullet from a high-powered rifle.
The graphic video of 10 sniper attacks was obtained by CNN -- through intermediaries -- from the Islamic Army of Iraq, one of the most active insurgent organizations in Iraq.
The deadly tactic is one the U.S. military also uses to take out insurgents.
Retired Gunnery Sgt. Jack Coughlin was one of the top U.S. Marine Corps snipers in Iraq and has written a book about his experiences -- "Shooter: The Autobiography of the Top-Ranked Marine Sniper."
"I have over 60 kills," he told CNN's Gary Tuchman. "We seek out the enemy and eliminate them with precision fire."
Tuchman used Coughlin's critical eye to analyze the Islamic Army of Iraq video.
Coughlin said the time lapse between the sound of the shot and the man getting hit indicates the gunfire is coming from about 300 to 500 yards away and probably from a higher angle.
But Couglin said he's sure this team of at least three people has been trained well because they're so calm.
"They have their stuff wired," he said. "They know what they're doing." (Watch the ex-Marine describe snipers' deadly work -- 2:46)
The 20-year Marine veteran said the kind of body armor worn by troops in combat can be effective against a sniper's bullet, and he added that there are other ways to defend against the horrifying attacks.
"The worst enemy of a sniper is another sniper," Coughlin said. "Our snipers are hunting these guys -- I guarantee you this is happening as we speak."
Coughlin added that, in many cases, the best defense is a good offense.

Amazing how CNN gets the scoop on these videos.
I just emailed CNN and told them I am appalled that they would air this footage. I told them that I manually took them off of the channel lineup on my TV, and am in the process of showing all my friends how to do this.
CNN is a treasonous leftie hack network that just won't go away because there are a few million far left commie nut jobs that pleasure themselves as they watch the CNN slime oozing out from their TV sets.
Something is illegal here.
CNN.. it won't work, get out of town. YOU are the enemy.
Only once? I noticed that the traffic was a little heavy. Not that anybody would spawn a 'bot.......They will spend a whole pile of cash on this one. Even sent a few legit notes.
I was stuck in an airport for several hours Monday. The only seat I could find near my gate had one of those TVs that only shows CNN hanging right next to it. It was pure hell listening to that channel complain and complain for those hours. They complained about the economy (the so called War on the Middle Class in spite of record low unemployment and record high stock indices, Iraq, Iran, North Korea, etc, and found ways to blame them all on Bush and Republicans. Finally, I stood up and announced to everyone sitting around that I felt like I was being tortured by being forced to listen to CNN all this time. Most of the people within earshot yelled in agreement with me. How does CNN get exclusivity in the airports if nobody likes them?
Holy crap...literally!
What airport were you at?
Chicago O'Hare. But those friggin TVs are in most airports these days - they even have CNN logos on them.
That video is a snuff film and CNN's airing it is evil and criminal!
CNN's executives and producers should be prosecuted.
Yeah, it's my guess that CNN provides the TV's under the condition CNN is the only channel shown on them.
I had the exact same experience in St. Louis two weeks ago. And they had the sound up so loud you couldn't tune it out.
That video is a snuff film...
It is also enemy propoganda and encourages and gives comfort to the enemy. If CNN felt ANY obligation to support thier country at all, they would not air it.
Not that I want to see this, but I cannot get a video, only the sound.
I wonder who we should talk to about getting Fox News on in those airports instead...
