REDMOND, Ore. - It's one of those stories where someone says "I wish I had my camera."
Good thing someone did, or Kevin Cox would surely be accused of telling a tall tale.
Cox, who attends Cascade Middle School and is on the track and field team, was warming up for a cross-country foot race when he got some unexpected competition: a young deer.
Cox says he and some other students were petting the deer when it took a liking to the young athlete.
Photos shot by Dennis Oliphant show the young buck closely tailing Cox as he runs through some scrub brush.
But then the encounter got a little closer - and scarier.
As the deer closed in, it jumped on Cox's back and administered a few friendly licks, no doubt attracted by the smell of salty sweat.
The friendly deer followed the young runner for nearly seven minutes, until he ran toward a group of coaches who shooed the deer away.
Afterwards, Cox said the encounter was fun, but "a little scary." He was not injured.
That last pick is hilarious, with hands up trying to fend off the deer!

The photographer evidently was running to keep up, too. Unless the photos are out of sequence, he got in front of the runner and the deer at one point. Cute story, thanks for sharing. I'd love to pet a young deer like that, must have been pretty tame. I probably would be a little frightened if it jumped on me like that, probably could have knocked the kid down. I guess their brief "born free" relationship is over.

Its that season of the year, when deer are in rut.
Too funny. One of the men going through basic with my son was tackled by a deer on the track at Fort Benning. By the last week of basic he thought everyone had forgotten about it until they all went through MOUT. The MOUT instructor introduced himself and described the exercises involved with the course The soldier who had been tackled asked if they had a lot of injuries during MOUT. The Sgt's answer "well you should be Ok but hell just a few weeks ago some poor guy got run over by a deer just running".
Poor kid, for the remainder of his days he will have to explain how pics of a deer trying to mount him got on the net.

Day before yesterday I was out in the woods with my dog when I came across a young doe who was down. At first I thought she was caught in brambles and I crawled far into the bramble patch to try to free her. Initially she was frightened of me and tried to get away, but gentle petting calmed her down. It turned out she had a broken pelvis and was partially paralyzed in the hindquarters. In mercy there was only one thing to do for her. It was very sad, especially since I had been petting her and she was not afraid of me anymore. I confess to feeling very upset. She was beautiful and sweet.
Often it is very hard to do what's right. Perhaps, somehow, she knew you were being good to her.
The net result was a lot of giggling, a frightened deer, and a lot of new nicknames for the fearless deerhunter. The opposing force, while investigating the noise, walked into our ambush.
