Poll suggests tight race in seventh district

“Indianapolis - A year ago Julia Carson was bidding farewell to Rosa Parks, an African American pioneer she believes paved the way for her by refusing to give up her seat. Now with a decade of political service in Congress, it's Carson fighting to stay put.

"I am a very optimistic person," she said. "I don't believe in failure."

“In an exclusive WTHR People's Agenda Poll, Carson is trailing Republican Eric Dickerson.

“Of the 468 voters polled in the Seventh Congressional District, 45 percent say they would vote for Eric Dickerson. Carson polls 42 percent. Four-percent would chose someone else and nine percent just aren't sure.”

Incumbent Democrat Julia Carson is not letting those numbers bother her, saying "I was born down in the polls. People didn't think that I would ever, ever have the unmitigated gall to be a member of the United States Congress."

N.B. We are hearing no denials from Carson. Her own internal polls must be showing the same numbers, or worse.

Republican challenger Eric Dickerson says the numbers substantiate his efforts. "It's just another confirmation," he said, "that our campaign is very, very serious and we do intend to win this race."

Despite a 4-point margin of error, and Carson's history of proving polls wrong, her camp isn't about to dismiss the results. Numbers that also show her approval rating on the slide.

42 percent of the respondents approve of Carson's job performance, while 49-percent disapprove. Another 9-percent couldn't say one way or the other.

N.B. Carson won last time with 66%. The nine percent who “couldn’t say” may just be hesitant to speak out of guilt over not voting Democrat.

A total of 85 percent of those polled live inside the Indianapolis city limits, which has traditionally been Julia Carson's base.

Both camps see Center Township as the proving ground and, as Dickerson put it, if you can't get 50 percent of the vote out of Center Township, you can't win the 7th.

B.N. By doing 85% of this survey in the City, the media did its best to tilt the results and still came up short

Oct. 20, 2006 Wthr.com

N.B. In Maryland and Ohio Black Republicans Mike Steele and Ken Blackwell are getting a “reported” 33% of Black voters to support them. With the tradition of always voting Democrat pressuring them, some Black voters may not be “undecided” as they are telling the pollsters. They may feel guilty about voting other than straight Democrat.

With this possibility in mind, it is not at all hard to imagine one or both getting as much as 40% of the Black vote. Since the 7th Indiana is a very Black district and Eric Dickerson has 45% already, the 9% “undecided” may already be ready to support him but not ready to say it out loud to a stranger who calls them.

Dickerson may very well be winning this race right now. This is why we have to support him.

Here’s what Eric Dickerson is all about, why he is leading and why he needs our help.

About Eric Dickerson USMC Officer Eric Dickerson

In the 27 years he's lived in Indianapolis, Eric Dickerson has distinguished himself as a leader and role model. He joined General Motors Corporation's Allison Engine Division as an engineer and pilot. Rising through the ranks, he eventually was named director of public relations. He continued in that role when Rolls-Royce Corp. bought Allison.

After he retired from Rolls-Royce, Eric's career took another turn. He became an entrepreneur and opened Eric Dickerson Buick in 1999. He also did a brief stint as a talk show host on NewsTalk 1430 WXNT; and he bought Maggie Moo Ice Cream Treatery in 2005.

Eric Dickerson

A native of Detroit, Michigan, Eric graduated from Detroit's Northwestern High School, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from Western Michigan University. He was accepted to the U.S. Marine Corps officer candidate school and earned his wings as a pilot. After graduating from flight school, Eric served with the HMA 269 Attack Squadron in Jacksonville, North Carolina. When his active duty service ended in 1979 and he moved to Indianapolis, Eric joined the Indiana National Guard, where he served as a helicopter pilot and maintenance officer.

Eric resides in Marion County where he is active in community affairs. He has earned numerous awards for his business and community achievements over the years including:

·General Motors North Central Region top Buick Dealer, 2000.

·Recognition for donating a Cadillac to IPS School 69 that helped raise more than $20,000 through raffle ticket sales.

·Recognition for taking 40 IPS students to Washington, D.C. at his own expense for an extended educational field trip.

·Indianapolis Public School's Board Certificate of Appreciation for outstanding achievement as a partner in education, 2003.

·Benefactor for two “In Spite of Annual Banquet” dinners for approximately 100 troubled local youth.

·Butler University Certificate of Appreciation as a regular guest lecturer.

·Minority MPA Association Certificate of Appreciation for his guest lecture "Encouraging Minorities to Become entrepreneurs."

This a man we must all get around. If he can be doing THIS well at THIS point in the cycle, you have to ask : how many other Republicans are doing better than the polls show?

Supporting Eric Dickerson means the Democrats HAVE to fight in the 7th district when they had no intention of doing so. This draws off money and troops from other endangered Republicans elsewhere.

Gee, when I thoughty of Eric Dickerson from Indianapolis, I was thinking of the great Rams/Colt running back! He's GOT to pick up some votes that way!

I like his campaign slogan: "A Congressional Seat is a Terrible Thing to Waste!"

If Carson is in this much trouble it is hard to believe those 3 GOP incumbents all could lose. Maybe the tide is turning.

Also good news with Rep Reynolds in NY, and Sen Burns coming back in MT. I think there is reason for cautious optimism.

FWIW, Rep Rob Simmons is ahead by 2 in CT. Not a runaway but as long as his opponent is behind that is a little encouraging.

I'm not sure that Hostettler can pull it out in the 8th., the Dem's have pretty boy Brad Ellsworth running against him. Brad is portraying himself as a conservative and that he won't be partisan. Hostettler has always managed to pull the elections out, they've been close, but Ellsworth has something like a 15% lead over him. Plus he has our extremely liberal newspaper backing him. He's getting front page, above the fold coverage almost daily, editorials about how wonderful his is. Hostettler is nowhere to be found. It is totally obvious and has been pointed out numerous times, but they don't change. I hope that Hostettler wins, just so that I can see the sad, forelorn look on Ellsworths face all over the news the next day.

Hello Everyone. I'm one of the volunteers working on the Eric Dickerson Campaign. I have a longer post over on GOP Club but we are taking this bull by the horns and dragging it to the ground. We've taken donations FROM THE PEOPLE and we intend to SERVE THE PEOPLE. Liberal groups like Daily Kos, MoveOn, etc. are putting money into Julia Carson's campaign thru individual donations. The Free Republic can do better!

Here's my posting over on GOP Club where I post updates to the campaign and my notes from the campaign trail:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-gop/1726756/posts

Eric has attended 3 "candidate forums" with Julia Carson with pro-democrats "moderating". She refused to debate Eric Dickerson directly. Her reason is supposedly "Why should I give free advertising to my opponent which has no campaign funds?" Eric Dickerson has SMOKED Julia Carson in all the candidate forums and "debates" to date. Unfortunately debates and candidate forums don't win elections. Votes do. And we need EVERY ONE WE CAN GET!

You've all been to his website. You've read his positions. We would greatly appreciate your support these final 9 days to put a true American Hero into Congress.

Thank you all for your support so far.

Not sure why she thinks this is the most important issue ?

Both Carson and Dickerson have ideas about addressing what they view as the root cause of rising crime in the city.

Carson will introduce legislation to limit the amount of lead-based paint and chemicals used in houses and apartment buildings, which some experts believe is a factor in making exposed children more prone to acts of violence.

We have to make sure that a lead-based environment does not perpetuate violence and other medical problems, she said.
