I finally turned around and told them to knock it off as they were being disrespectful to me and each other. Surprisingly they shut their mouths - at least until I was out of ear shot.

Not so surprising actually. Your in 'normals-ville' where the kids listen to adults and ALL adults are in charge of ALL kids. Notice that you have not heard from the kids moms about 'yelling' at their kids? Of course not, for two reasons 1. The kids didn't tell their parents cause they know they were wrong and that their parents might punish them as well. 2. Even if some mom did hear about it they are HAPPY you took control.
