Kim's life of luxury as the people starve

By Richard Spencer in Beijing
(Filed: 16/10/2006)

From imported lobsters to cognac and Mercedes-Benz cars, the expensive tastes of North Korea's secretive leader, Kim Jong-il, have never failed to stagger those who have witnessed his conspicuous consumption.

However, his love of the finer things in life, in a country where his people have been allowed to starve, is now being challenged by the United Nations sanctions imposed at the weekend.

They include a clause banning the export of luxury goods to North Korea and aim to cut off or at least greatly diminish the dictator's supplies, which he is believed to use to reward senior officials for their loyalty.

Little reliable detail emerges from behind Kim's secluded palaces in his capital, Pyongyang.

But reports from defectors, previous employees and, in some extraordinary cases, people whom he has kidnapped but who have returned to the West, have described a lifestyle that would be unimaginable to North Koreans, who survived a major famine that killed hundreds of thousands, if not millions, a decade ago.

One source was Konstantin Pulikovskiy, a Russian official, who described a train journey on which he accompanied Kim to Moscow in 2001.

Kim's chefs, he said, had cooked lobster that had been flown in specially to points along the way.

Another was Kenji Fujimoto, Kim's Japanese chef, who on returning to Tokyo told newspapers of his partiality for shark's fin soup, a delicacy which he would eat three times a week.

At one stage, Kim was reported to be the world's biggest single customer for Hennessy's Paradis cognac, although he was later forced to cut down his intake, acting on medical advice, and took up fine French red wine.

Jung Sung-san, a North Korean musician who defected to the south, said his father worked for the state firm responsible for importing Mercedes-Benz, bought legally abroad, to be used by the country's leaders. The exact import route changes, though, and will be hard to monitor.

North Korea operates a variety of front companies around the world through its embassies, many of which are involved in both making money and sourcing goods for Pyongyang.

His son and heir apparent is a big Eric Clapton fan. I bet he would make a good ruler of North Korea.

I do think this is the correct thing even though it is satire.

Bush Mulls Bombing N. Korea ‘Back to the Food Age’
by Scott Ott

(2006-10-10) — Even as President George Bush insisted that the U.S. would continue to pursue diplomacy in the North Korean nuclear crisis, he added today that every option is still on the table, including the possibility of “bombing them back to the food age.”

“It breaks my compassionate conservative heart that Kim Jong-Il’s people are starving while he’s blowing millions of dollars on weapons of mass destruction,” said Mr. Bush. “If it weren’t for U.S. and United Nations food aid, he’d have a massive famine on his hands.”

The president suggested that a carefully executed bombing campaign, or a Special Ops military unit, could return the country to “the food age” — a time when the Korean people could feed themselves without assistance.

“Sometimes,” the president said, “it takes guns to make butter.”

I read your link. If the west knows so much about this guy, take him out. Put the pressure on Kim by killing off his descendants.

Yeah, he's a real winner-looks like an actor whose sole purpose is to get kicked through a window by Jackie Chan;)

The sanctions were a step in the right direction. But if the Chinese, who signed on to the sanctions yet claim they will refuse to enforce them, could blow the whole thing. I guess we will have to wait and see. If we win in November, its time to use our assetts in the region, Aegis cruisers, for example, to deliver his majesty a "more firm" message."

I don't know...the NK people may not know. I heard tonight that they don't even know that the US went to to moon in 1969. They still don't know that today!!

350-400,000 of them assembled last week in the Square to protest Kim. That in and by itself speaks volumes.

Socialism is the Politics of Envy.

Think of the most envious people you know.

They would rather live in a dirt tent themselves than see more fortunate and ambitious others driving Porsches.

That is, they would rather burn their own house down than see you in a better one.

A shameless political demagogue (think Kennedy, Kerry, Clinton) can tempt these poor bastards with the hope of political power, and voila! you have it - Socialism.

Socialist seek total control over your life, including even the food you eat and the information you access.

Socialists do not believe in making the weak strong. Socialists believe in making the strong weak.

Socialists understand and disseminate the most sophisticated propaganda possible, including via news and entertainment, in order to disarm the populace save for the most rebellious, who are marginalized, confined and in some cases murdered.

Of course, because of corruption and hypocrisy, some people under Socialism are far more equal than others, and this political elite crowd and their complicit supporters live lives better than even the wealthiest Americans could imagine.

This political elite circle actively supports and props up the Socialist regime, and will do anything to maintain their exotic lifestyle, including state-sanctioned and supported rape and murder.

A vicious cycle that only an exorcism or premature death can break.
