Some 150 [Guatemalan] soldiers will be deployed to the Republic of Lebanon next year to participate in United Nations peacekeeping operations, Defense Minister Francisco Bermúdez reported.

The official explained that 12 million quetzales (or $1.5 million) will be invested in the repair of armored vehicles for troop use.

"Three officers will travel at the end of November to join the provisional troops, and two more will join them afterwards," he explained.

The Central American Armed Forces Conference may send as many as 600 troops to that mission once conditions towards sending the contingent are concrete.

A U.N. Security Council resolution put an end to the war between Israel and Lebanon on August 14.

Vice-President Eduardo Stein said that the withdrawal of paratroopers from the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been under consideration for one year and a half.

"The Middle East is important because if, there is peace there, there will also be in other regions," Stein concluded.
