WASHINGTON - Hollywood may have to tone down its portrayal of the military’s screaming, in-your-face boot camp drill sergeant. In today’s Army, shouting is out and a calmer approach to molding young minds is in, says the head of Pentagon personnel. The Army says it has reduced by nearly 7 percent the number of recruits who wash out in the first six to 12 months of military life.

My God, what is happening to our military? The screaming and yelling is designed to teach the kids to function under stress and pressure. What's next, mandatory castration of males prior to leaving from MEPS?

I'm sorry girls, you didn't want to get up at 0500, I'll come back at 0900 to see if you are all ready for todays training. I am just a graduate of the soft spoken D.I. course so I hope I didn't wake you.

It is bad enough for Drill Sergeants to make soldiers out of civilians in 90 days, they have to be PC too! Jeez!

I just appreciated knowing, within a week or two, that they didn't want to really kill me.

OMG, the military has become effeminate. It's turning to giving warm fuzzies to every little snotnose picker.

The day we were leaving boot camp in San Diego (MCRD) our drill instruction said "and don't introduce me to your parents, I did more for you in 6 weeks than they did in 18 years"; for the most part he was right.

Our military is the one institution in which the liberals haven't had their way. We can't let that change.

Agreed -

I joined the USAF during Viet Nam and ended up having a "basic training" that was led by a Marine DI that had just come out of early retirement and joined the USAF....

Lucky for me I had just spent 3 years of high-school at a military academy in Texas, so I was a bit more prepared than most.

Going too easy in basic training will IMO only get more of them wounded or killed in combat later on.

Proof that the world is quickly coming to an end.

Reminds me when I did basic training...they made a guy who had screwed up put a cloth laundry bag on his head, climb a pole, and bark like a dog while the rest of us were running laps and getting screamed at. Most of us were strangely horrified in fear while at the same time doubled over in laughter.

I went through Signal Corps basic at Camp Gordon, GA in 1951. I was amazed at the soft-spoken treatment we got from the NCOs, most of whom seemed to be reserves called up for active duty. It was only a six week cycle. One sergeant, though, looked us over one morning and said: "I see why all of you are in the Signal Corps. I don't see a man here who could make it in the Infantry!"

Tailhook? I was in the Navy during the Clinton years and all I heard was how PC it had become.

I have to draw the line at DIs kissing the recruits. GYSGT Stowe would have had a heart attack if he saw today's US military.
