Reagan later admitted he was wrong. He was also wrong about AIDS and he later apologized. Reagan knew he was fallible and so he aimed to self-correct. GW Bush will never admit he was wrong except to say he appointed somebody wrong for a job.

OK, so if Bush later admits he was wrong that makes it all okay?

Bush is wrong. Reagan was wrong. Period.

And yes it is entirely possible for a great percentage of the 20 million illegally here to go home.

I never argued it wan't "possible"--many things are possible. Likely? Nope. Desirable to make it happen as I described? You really think the American people on the whole want that?

My own idea is as draconian as any other (and more palatable), but I'm sick of explaining it to FReepers who think any discussion of the realities of a mass deprtation makes one a supporter of amnesty.

The "we can't deport 12 million illegals" argument, is simply to get everyone to say that we must ergo, then give them a path to citizenship.

Maybe for you it is, not for me.

What page are we on?

Threads popping up about Bush STILL proposing amnesty. Meantime the campaign for Republicans to get out and vote are doing double time trying to make up for the damage Bush is doing.

This is ridiculous. Bush doesn't care. Stop threatening me with what will happen, I know perfectly well what will happen, blame him.

"If all those fine and upstanding men and women in Washington thought THEIR JOBS were at risk, the wall would be up in a week!"

Oh, they know their jobs are at risk, but rather than doing what WE the PEOPLE want, they've started this new 'get out and vote Republican' campaign, no matter what, or shame on you!

"But everybody in our land understands these people must be treated with respect and dignity. "

Freaking UNBELIEVABLE! So Bush thinks we should be respectful of those that willfully break our laws? This is beyond outrageous.

We must understand that you can't kick 12 million people out of your country;

I really don't get this. Why not?

But we also MUST acknowledge reality

What does that mean? Isn't the question precisely which opinion of reality is more accurate? I'm not sure there's an important difference between saying "We must acknowledge reality," and "You must agree with me because I'm right."

What part of reality is round-ups with machine guns and so forth? I have yet to see a "reality"-based accounting comparing the cost of a fence combined with putting Mexicans who are here illegally on the other side of it to the cost of letting illegals stay here and drain our social programs, overwhelm our schools, and so forth. The Feds pay (maybe) for the fence, but the local community pays for the schools and hospitals. And the reality is - or part of it - that hospitals close when their Emergency Room expenses get too large. What does THAT cost -- and who pays?

I think the reality may be a tad more complex than you suggest.

You don't round up 12 million people. You deport them when they are caught in a crime. You make sure that you INCREASE the amount of LEGAL immigrants permitted into the US with proper visas and make sure that only those with LEGAL visas are permitted to work. That way, the ones who are ILLEGAL will deport themselves and get the visas to come back legally. You make sure that only LEGAL immigrants are ever permitted to become citizens.

You may be on to something. If the House goes over to the Democrats, it will then pass an amnesty bill much more like that already passed by the Senate. President then would sign it in a very public ceremony. The price of this bill would be the risk that the House would start impeachment hearings, but he may well view that as worth the price.

Nope--just following in Reagan's footsteps

Actually, those footsteps would be closer to Walter Mondale's than to Reagan's. Mondale was a big fan of Simpson-Mazzoli, except for the part that said employers had to determine the status of employees prior to hiring. What the U.S. actually got out of Simpson-Mazzoli was much more like Mondale's vision: amnesty without employer sanctions. Like many others, Reagan mistakenly thought that the enforcement part of Simpson-Mazzoli would actually happen. As it turned out, we got the amnesty, but not the rest. That is not what Reagan had in mind when he signed the bill.

I'm as much for deportation as anyone but you're absolutely correct--people simply can't say so on FR because we're tired of being labelled as someone who's FOR illegal immigration just because we recognize reality.

The reality is the law hasn't been enforced. We haven't even tried to enforce immigration law. If we actaully enforced immigration law we wouldn't have to resort to mass deportation. The reality is the government is not enforcing immigration law.

"We must understand that you can't kick 12 million people out of your country;"

Mexico, and neighboring CA countries sure found a way.

We need to stop the influx of illegals but Bush is right about it not being possible to deport all of the ones who are here. I'll be satisfied if the Republicans can build the border fence and make it very hard for illegals to get in. I also think any illegals arrested for other crimes should be deported immediately if they are not yet citizens, but going around searching for illegals is not practical.

When one listens to Bush, one has to wonder if Ted Turner had a twin brother.

The law hasn't been enforced on so many levels. Over and over here I see the arguments "Deport them... no, fire the people who hire them". Yada yada yada... so much freakin wind.

Why does it have to be one or the other? There seems to be a heck of alot of agitators on FR lately. And I don't know who the hell they're workin for, but it ain't Joe Six Pack American.
