MOSCOW, October 10 (Itar-Tass) - The situation regarding the Iranian nuclear problem was in the focus of attention during the conversation on Tuesday between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Kislyak and ambassador of the Republic of Iran to Moscow Gholamreza Ansari. The diplomats also exchanged opinions on a number of international problems, the ministry noted. The meeting was held at the request of the Iranian ambassador.
Nicholas Burns, the US undersecretary of state, said earlier to the BBC that the drafting of a new Security Council resolution on Irans nuclear programme would start this week. He said the resolution would be drafted on the basis of paragraph 47 of article seven of the United Nations Charter that envisages the use of sanctions.
The foreign ministers of the permanent members of the UN Security Council and of Germany, meeting in London last Friday, agreed that the July proposals of the six sides on Iran would remain on the negotiating table. They also expressed disappointment over Irans not stopping the work on uranium enrichment.
Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, said the fact that the proposals remain on the negotiating table and that the sides are ready for a dialogue had been the most important results of the meeting. No draft resolution of the Security Council on the Iranian nuclear programme exists on paper, he stressed. Nobody considers the voting in the Council at present, the minister added. Our stand will be that any steps should aim at bringing the talks closer rather that punishing, isolating Iran, he said.
We need to sanction the russians, too!
