There's no news here...this has been official US policy, and our treaty obligation, for at least 50 years.

From last night's White House statement:

"The United States is closely monitoring the situation and reaffirms its commitment to protect and defend our allies in the region."

61 years. Today is the anniversary. The 4th of July was chosen for the ICBM test for a similar reason.

I suspect it was intended as a "little reminder" to North Korea, as well as Red China and Russia, of those facts.

I don't think NK will attack anyone soon. They're going to try to hold the world hostage for concessions.

But, they could very quickly sell nukes to Iran.

This is more of, "we have no answer for this dilemma, so let's just state the obvious to placate the sheeple".

You are right.

This is NOTHING NEW.

Standard policy written completely into bilateral mutual defense treaties.

However, if NK attempts to proliferate we'll do nothing or go to the UN.

I think in his 2nd term Mr. Bush has discovered the limits of America's "superpower" status.

Any ships leaving NK headed for the middle-east should mysteriously disappear in the vicinity of a US attack submarine.
