Evangelicals Blame Foley, Not Republican Party
NY Times ^ | October 9, 2006 | DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK

Gary C. Knapp for The New York Times
“That is the problem we have in society. Nobody polices anybody. Everybody has a ‘right’ to do whatever.”
DAVID THOMAS, Father, Norfolk, Va.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Oct. 7 — As word of Representative Mark Foley’s sexually explicit e-mail messages to former pages spread last week, Republican strategists worried — and Democrats hoped — that the sordid nature of the scandal would discourage conservative Christians from going to the polls.

But in dozens of interviews here in southeastern Virginia, a conservative Christian stronghold that is a battleground in races for the House and Senate, many said the episode only reinforced their reasons to vote for their two Republican incumbents in neck-and-neck re-election fights, Representative Thelma Drake and Senator George Allen.

“This is Foley’s lifestyle,” said Ron Gwaltney, a home builder, as he waited with his family outside a Christian rock concert last Thursday in Norfolk. “He tried to keep it quiet from his family and his voters. He is responsible for what he did. He is paying a price for what he did. I am not sure how much farther it needs to go.”

The Democratic Party is “the party that is tolerant of, maybe more so than Republicans, that lifestyle,” Mr. Gwaltney said, referring to homosexuality.

Most of the evangelical Christians interviewed said that so far they saw Mr. Foley’s behavior as a matter of personal morality, not institutional dysfunction.

All said the question of broader responsibility had quickly devolved into a storm of partisan charges and countercharges. And all insisted the episode would have little impact on their intentions to vote.

Perhaps the reason for this article is The Times saying to demoncrap operatives: "Don't think this is over. You must man those phone banks and keep working."

Either that or else they are sending the signal, dump more or find another scandal.

You're probably right, though at least this is accurate reporting. Liberals don't know or understand Christians so all their hopes for suppressing the vote were misplaced.

 Foley who?

That would be former Speaker of the House Tom Foley, who (according to former Speaker of the House Jim Wright) is a homosexual. Tom Foley, of course, is a Democrat.

If the Dems want to play Foley games, perhaps it is time to discuss one of their own.

Despite the best efforts of the DBM that's exactly what most Americans say when asked about Foley.

Duh? And that's what we, conservatives, have known all along, but the MSM couldn't get through their heads.

All the talk about conservatives deserting the polls because of Foley...how ridiculous.

The moral outrage from the Democrats claiming that the Republican party has no values, all the while, the Democrats continue to be the party of abortion and gay marrriage. Pure hypocrisy...and it may drive more conservatives to the polls.

"that the sordid nature of the scandal would discourage conservative Christians from going to the polls"

Discouraging Christians from going to the polls was the purpose of disclosing Foley's emails and IMs with 20 and 21 year old young men. In several states the question of gay marriage is on the ballot. The Democrats want gay marriage to pass in these states. It has a good chance of passing without the Christian vote.

Here is a possible list of the next victims on C.R.E.W.'s hit list. C.R.E.W. claims they're corrupt. Most are Republicans. Beyond Delay

That's been the Dems goal from the beginning. They were really stunned in 2004 because they had a large turonut by their base and yet they still lost. They have to get GOP voters to stay home.

As word of Representative Mark Foley’s sexually explicit e-mail messages....

Would someone please point me to the sexually explicit part? I don't see anything remotely explicit in his e-mails.

All the talk about conservatives deserting the polls because of Foley...how ridiculous.

John eFF'in Kerry tried to do the same thing when he made that comment about Mary Cheney being lesbian during the debates.

All he succeeded in doing was making the viewers wince, showing his true colors, and demonstrating honed demoncrat skills at lowering the bar regarding public discourse and public politeness.

The closest thing to position papers or briefs I have written about this subject, and gays are here:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1715754/posts?page=14#14
and here:
http://www.freedominion.ca/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=785474&highlight=#785474

And I truly believe that the Left's throwing gays under the bus for cheap ( and probably transient or nonexistent ) political gains is going to backfire on them, badly. They look mean in both the modern and archaic sense of the word.

We are praying for thunderstorms in Tenn. on Nov. 7. True story the dems in Shelby county(largest county in Tenn. and mostly Democrat) are afraid of lighting and will not go outside if they do not have to.
