Quick blurb just now on Fox.
To: Lurker
I am way over on the other side of the county, but my in-laws live at McGregor Downs and I am seriously considering going to get them. It's about 4 miles by road to their house.
The winds are blowing from the east, so they are blowing away with them, but who knows what will happen.
Evidently they cannot even get NEAR the place -- and they have "regrouped" 3 times since 10 o'clock.

Thanks for the ping. I've been watching this story, but didn't realize it had become this bad until now. I'm on the east side of Raleigh so we're OK here.

PCBs burning, pesticides AND chlorine, among other things.

With a vapor density of 2.5, it's also heavier than air, and will stay close to the ground rather than dissipating. Tough hazmat situation.

I'm in NW outside 540, but you better watch out for the coming storms.

PCBs burning, pesticides AND chlorine, among other things. All really fun stuff to deal with.
This fire might have to turn itself out because mixes of various chemicals can make fighting it almost impossible.

EQ North Carolina offers a single stop option for your waste management needs
The facility can bulk and store your universal and drummed wastes to create full loads that reduce unit transportation costs. EQNC also bulks and solidifies small quantity non-hazardous waste streams into larger consolidated streams that are managed much more cost-effectively. Mixed loads destined for multiple EQ facilities use EQNC as a one-stop facility.

Do not, repeat, do not go anywhere near the danger zone with stuff.
Chlorine is highly reactive with other stuff and is plenty lethal all on its own.
Leave the rescuing to the professionals.
Hazmat situations are especially dangerous at night as you can't see the stuff until it's too late. You won't be helping anyone by becoming a casualty.

Not likely.
Facilities like this are always just one minor mistake away from becoming a disaster.

It's a chemical storage plant..evidently they store "old" chemicals.
Why are they storing them so close to downtown?

I just did a Google maps measurement and I'm 10,000 feet north of the fire. Wind direction is from the east. Just got a call from 911 and they said to evacuate to the north. I'm going to wait a bit as I'm sure the roads are jammed. I've got a few gas masks from my 9-11 stash.

Didn't think about that. Thanks for the reminder. Good grief, I sure hope the rain would wash it to the ground first before it travels that distance. Just heard on local TV that the number for evacuations has reached 16,000.
To: Lurker
Okay. I'll take your word for it.
BTW, there are LOOKERS closer to the fire than the fire department can get.
And the town manager is NOT going to send the police in to get them.
