Iraq convoy leader blasts ABC News report
The Roanoke Times ^ | 10/04/06 | John Cramer

A Virginia Army National Guard convoy leader and an American truck driver on Tuesday angrily denied an accusation that the guardsmen abandoned a civilian supply convoy that was ambushed in Iraq.

U.S. Army and Guard officials also criticized ABC News for reporting the accusation last week from one civilian contractor driver without getting comment from military commanders, soldiers and other contractor drivers, all of whom said the U.S. troops reacted properly in the firefight on Sept. 20, 2005.

The soldiers, including several from Southwest Virginia, were members of the Rocky Mount-based 1173rd Transportation Company.

The ABC News report included video taken by contractor driver Preston Wheeler of Mena, Ark., that showed an Army gun truck driving away when insurgents opened fire in the village of Ad Duluiyah in the hostile Sunni Triangle.

Military officials said the convoy got lost because of an erroneous map, putting the 15 soldiers in five gun trucks and 13 unarmed drivers in 12 trucks up against 100 to 200 insurgents firing AK-47s and rocket-propelled grenades for about half an hour before U.S. air and ground reinforcements arrived.

Three drivers with KBR -- a Halliburton subsidiary -- were killed, three were wounded and four trucks were disabled, blocking the street as the front part of the convoy moved forward and the back of the convoy remained stranded. One soldier was wounded.

Wheeler said U.S. troops didn't return to the scene for nearly 40 minutes, during which he watched insurgents execute two civilian drivers ...

A good read, by a good writer, played on A1 of the Roanoke Times today, to their credit. I eagerly await the military-supporting editorial to follow. Not.

ABC hates America. Chris Mathews hates America. Keith Olberman hates America. They all have that in common and then they have this in common, they know nothing about the military, nothing about military convoys and nothing about the American soldiers who populate those convoys.

"The ABC News report included video taken by contractor driver Preston Wheeler of Mena, Ark., that showed an Army gun truck driving away..."

OK. I've been in the Army a long time. I have never heard the term "gun truck" before. WTF is a gun truck? Could it be a hard-top, up-armored HUMMER? If so, that would be an escort vehicle.

The "press/journalists" who write this crap are F'n IDIOTS.

Gun truck info...

http://www.llnl.gov/pao/news/news_releases/2005/NR-05-07-07.html

In Vietnam, some gun trucks were made by mounting an M113 chassis on the back of a heavy truck.

lol...You haven't been in that long, new guy. "Gun truck" is a term out of the Vietnam War. A gun truck was usually a deuce and a half with "add-on" perforated steel plates, sand bages and machine gun mounts. I don't know if this reporter is that old, or has watched too many "Platoon" type films.

It is good to see ABC (Always Been Chickensh**) get called for its' biased and lying report on this incident. I only hope the soldiers involved get as much airtime as they gave the dumba**ed truck driver from Arkansas to clear their good names, or if ABC denies them that choice, then they should sue them for slander and charactor defamation. Bet we would then see some real retractions then from ABC!!

Thanks for the article. I posted this ABC issue the day after when Lou Dobbs did a slightly more fair version of this ambush.

"Schneider said the report accurately portrayed Wheeler's experience during the ambush." - except for those other "gun trucks" behind and alongside his truck during the fight.

ABC News was unable to reach the soldiers and civilian drivers in the convoy because the military and Halliburton refused to release any information, said ABC News producer Rhonda Schwartz.- Hmmmm. they have this Wheeler clown. He didnt have any contact info for the 10 other truckers who have an opposite opinion of this ambush???? ABC News accounts on getting responses from others at this ambush just doesnt add up. Someone needs to investigate just how hard ABC news goes after balanced reporting. Ok, I know, a grandiose pipe dream, ABC news and balanced reporting.

You're right!

The Roanoke Times is too leftwing for my taste.

When I first read the cowardly driver's account last week, something just struck me as wrong. If there were a dozen trucks in the convoy and three drivers were killed, then there would be nine civilian drivers screaming for the heads of the soldiers who'd abandoned them, not just this one idiot.

I'm glad to see I was correct in my beliefs, but I doubt we will ever see an apology from ABC or any of the other MSM flunkies who jumped on the bandwagon and started screaming about cowardice and treason.

Seems to me the only weenie on this truck trip was this Wheeler guy.

Hey Dude, if the smell of cordite scares you, stay the f**k home!!

Our military needs to fight back the MSM harder. Get on their stations and call them "liars" to their face. To put out press releases give them the option whether they want to report on it.

"I'm fed up with ABC and Mr. Wheeler," said Herron, 39, a 20-year combat veteran from Ivanhoe. "I'm very angry. They're accusing us of being cowards. If we abandoned him, why is he back in the U.S. telling his story?"

I saw this program and was shocked and embarassed for our military. I am really glad the truth is out. But what about all the people who saw the program and yet never know the truth?

Shouldn't ABC interview the provider of the truth?

Vietnam was a long, long, time ago. It's just that to many of us it seems like yesterday.
