Gaithersburg city officials have announced that a property owner is willing to lease space to open a day-laborer center by winter, after rejections this year by more than 30 landlords. But several residents said yesterday that they will sue the city and force a recall of the mayor and the City Council if members approve the plan to help find work for laborers including illegal aliens.

If we have to have one, I'd have preferred it over on the other side of 355.
But it's not a bad spot, kind of out of the way, as much as there can be around here.
What I object to is that the costs associated with the federal failures on immigration are being increasingly borne by the states...
How about the foyer of the INS building?
Any word yet on whether they have found a site for drug dealing and prostitution?
But... WHY do you HAVE TO HAVE one?
Shut it down, send them home.
Real simple.
I don't want the damn thing.
It's the feds that needs to round them up and send them back, and they haven't done much in that department for a long, long time. This is their fault and it's the states that end up bearing the burden for their neglect...
Amen!
Recalling the goofballs who want this thing, is a good thing.
Tell them to take a look at little old backwash Wilkes Barre PA, they did it right.
The recall effort is DOA, if it happens at all. It's just not possible given the political realities of Montgomery County. The feds made this mess, and the states have to deal with the crime and the strain on resources.
I mean, we can't have Senior Fox mad at us or anything. And keeping people out, that's just mean. [/sarcasm]

That's in Aspen Hill ...
As a resident of Wheaton (AKA "Norte Tijuana") I must say that you're missing the REAL action if you go to Aspen Hill for vice!
Maryland Minuteman Civil Defense Corps has a brand new blog that will be covering this topic:

BTW -- Gaithersburg City Council is having a meeting at 7:30pm on Thursday, October 12th to discuss this day laborer site. Send me an email if you want more info.
It's a fairly run-down center, and the scuba shop is on the end closest to 270. I wouldn't let my kids run around there unsupervised in any event.
Like I said, if we have to have one, I'd rather it be on the far side of 355, past Old Gaithersburg. (Near the Diamond Grove MARC Station?...)
The crime is that this has to be an issue in the first place. Somehow, it became illegitimate for a sovereign nation to limit who is and who is not a citizen. The something for nothing crowd strikes again.
Also, I'm sure the folks who are building the townhomes over at Diamondback and Sam Eig will have something to say about this. Developers rule all in MoCo...
Our city once thought providing a center was a solution, and now the problem is much worse. It's only seen as approval and acceptance of their illegal presence in this country.
Yeah, but, what needs to happen simply isn't going to happen. This administration has punted on illegal immigration. Sad, but true. And short of electing Pat Buchanan, there's no one in the pipeline who would do anything other than what is being done now. So the states are left in the position of doing what they can to deal with the problems created along the border.
At that point, illegal immigration becomes a social service issue more so than a criminal matter. The feds have the jurisdiction to deal with immigration as a criminal matter, but have decided to abdicate this responsibility for reasons of political expediency.
Illegal immigration is the ultimate unfunded mandate.
Some days, I wonder why there are state governments at all. The feds seem to think they know best for everyone, and the Constitution is but a mere inconvenience.
NIMBY, huh?
I'd like to see it in the Potomac Valley Shopping Center...right across the street from Quince Orchard HS.
Let the homeowners in 'North Potomac' know what it feels like to have their local government 'moon' THEM!.
Good idea. Kentlands would be better, though. Right next to Lowe's...
One stop shopping, indeed.
Bethesda-Chevy Chase anyone??
