Johannesburg - One million white South Africans - almost a fifth - have left the country in the past ten years.
This figure was released last week in a report from the South African Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR).
Frans Cronjé, who compiled the report, said it was especially crime and affirmative action which had driven a fifth of South Africa's white population out of the country.
He did an analysis of Statistics South Africa's Household Surveys between 1995 and 2005, emigration figures and other reliable estimates on population numbers.
Cronjé said the results left himself and his colleagues dumbfounded.
"When we drew the graphs we saw that almost a whole generation of white South Africans are not here anymore."
Young people, children leaving
The SAIRR's population pyramid of white South Africans show a definite loss of young people and children under the age of ten.
The figures for 2005 put the number of white South Africans in the country at 4.3 million, 841 000 fewer than the 5.2 million of 1995.
Cronjé predicts that the white population would continue to shrink, and, he said, the situation would have a far-reaching impact on the economy.
"The white population is getting older, which means the white taxpayers are only going to contribute to the economy for the next twenty years. There would have to be a huge influx of skilled workers to fill this gap. This, unfortunately, is not the case."
Due to the inequalities of the past, the education of most of the black children is still not on par to fill these gaps.
Last year, for example, only 3 000 black learners passed matric with higher grade mathematics, said Cronjé.
Economically productive
Most of the white emigrants are economically productive people, said Marco Macfarlane, co-author of the report.
However, in the last decade the black economically productive population grew by 81%. Some of these people have slot into the high-income group, where black people make up a third of the top earners.
Whites, however, still account for half of this group, where Indians and coloureds make up 7% and 6% of the high-income group respectively.
The rest of the black entrants to the labour market are busy in the informal sector, which do not necessarily contribute to the tax income.
"Black people are entering the economy at a stiff pace, but of the economically active middle class (the country's biggest tax contributors), blacks only account for 1%."
Macfarlane said crime and affirmative action are the top reasons for the exodus of whites.
More whites going to leave
"And because the crime figures are not going to decline rapidly and affirmative action is to continue, more whites are going to leave.
"The young people reckon they are being punished for what happened in the previous dispensation. They are furious, because they feel they had no part in it," said Macfarlane.
According to the report the emigrants are between 20 and 40 years old.
"This is the group that have children and help grow the population, but now they're getting their children overseas. And they don't come back. That means the white population is going to continue to shrink."
The decline in the white population in the decade to 2005 is estimated at 16.1%.

That sentence doesn't even make sense.
In the workforce, you have a one month grace period to blame all problems on the guy that just left. Afterwards, it's all yours. How long does whitey have to take the blame in SA? Last one out please turn the lights out.

How long before SA devolves into total dysfunction?
When I read the title of the thread, I thought it was saying "San Antonio". No wonder I couldn't do the math.
I'm guessing that the answer will be proportional to the amount of foreign aid they receive, both intellectual and otherwise. Even with their incredible wealth of gold, diamonds and other resources they seem unable to make a go of it on their own (without breathtaking levels of crime, mayhem and socioeconomic problems).
This reminds me of the 'white flight' that occurs in many US "inner cities" when the social fabric starts to unravel due to the effects of certain new populations.
Same could be said about California.
Smart. They are looking at Zimbabwe and seeing what South Africa will look like in ten years (or less). Those who straggle will end up with nothing. "Snooze, you lose."

I don't think it has much to do with race, frankly. It's liberalism that allows the sores to fester beyond redemption. So in a sense, minority populations cut their own throats by voting for commie douche bags at every chance.
Rhodesia, the former "breadbasket of Africa", kicked out whitey in 1980 and whitey is still taking the blame for Zimbabwe's deterioration and chaos 26 years later. The answer to your question is: forever.
That is possible, if so, write off Africa.
Desirable countries for white SAs like New Zealand and Australia have strict criteria for allowing immigration, based mainly on skills and/or money the candidate possesses. So they are taking the most qualified of the white SAs- there are a lot more who would like to emigrate but don't qualify. You can't just pack up and leave for another country these days- it's actually pretty tough to emigrate to a desirable country.

True, although I would suggest that certain races have had their cultures destroyed by the Left far more so than others. Consider the increase in unwed mothers in the U.S. Black population and how that statistic (and others) coincides almost directly with Johnson's Great Society programs. Their culture used to be comparatively sound, until the Left decided that they needed their 'help'.
Cultural/ethnic differences have far-reaching consequences.
These blacks are totally void of any productivity to the human race. I really feel sorry for them.
Their culture in the USA prior to the nanny state was far superior. They've been in a dwonward spiral since. And the better start listening to Cosby and Sowell and others, instead of 50 cent and Oprah and Julian Bonds, unless they want large swaths to become a permanent underclass.
If 20 million illegals get in here, we can certainly absorb 4 million English speakers from SA.
I've been trying to figure out how to short the S.A. Rand for years. Looks like I might just have to bite the bullet and sell futures on CME/IMM on any rally for the next five years.
If ever there was a currency that is absolute toast over time, it's the Rand. My sympathies to those remaining in S.A. -- my sister spend several months there a couple-three years ago, judging horse shows, of all things, and reports that the countryside and the people there are both quite wonderful.

Yes, I assumed as much. I believe one of the comments at the bottom of the article mentions this discrepancy. I am curious about the number of black professionals leaving the country too. However, since whites are discriminated against, they are more likely to seek another country to relocate.

About ten years ago we knew a couple who fled SA and at that time there was a strict rule about how much money they could take out of the country. Consequently, they bought lots and lots of furniture in SA and brought it to the U.S. hoping to sell it for cash. Unfortunately, the furniture was rather unusual in design (beautiful wood, however) so it didn't fetch much and they had to start over from zero. They also said that their home in SA had become a fortification due to the crime.
I could not have said it better myself.
The smart ones are leaving and they are smart, productive people. I wish the US would let them in. I wish someone would help the elderly whites out, they shouldn't be left behind to face inevitable slaughter.
Or the Chinese. They would love to get their hands on the natural resources and space.

I would suggest that the damage done to American Black culture by the Left is so deep and so complete that it is already a de-facto permanent underclass, in that it will take generations of right-thinking to overcome the cancer of the entitlement mentality. President Bush and some others (among them Gov. Mitt Romney, as I recall) .have made tremendous improvements and strides toward eradicating the welfare culture and have, in large measure, turned the welfare hammock into a much less comfortable chair, but the logic of their work has not been accepted by the Left (naturally) and so hundreds of millions of lives will be needlessly ruined for decades to come.
I've heard it said that if the Klan were to have been installed as America's Government, they could not have done more to harm America's Blacks than what the Left and LBJ's Great Society programs of the '60's have done.

I noticed that line too. We are still being blamed in America so I don't doubt it will be an infinite blame game in SA too.
Through a relative I met a woman from South Africa. I haven't talked to her much but she says the crime in South Africa is horrible. She seems very happy to be over here, but I'm sure she misses her family over there. She has South African friends all over--Europe and Australia. I can't blame them for getting out.

I can't recall the name of the post because it was several years ago now, but some FReeper posted a link to some of the most horrific pictures of killings in Africa. Some of it was black on white. Even children and babies. Very distrubing. Al Qaeda almost has a monopoly on barbarism but not quite.

Yes they are. We hire white South Africans and have to go through a lot of paperwork to get them over here for 9 months. They have to go back for three months and then we try to get them back. However the greatest impediment are our consulates in S.A.. After about three years they won't allow them to come back. Our government is afraid they will stay here. They are good workers, speak english and are intelligent. They say it is getting worse back in S.A.
Bingo! The Chinese will come in to Africa in a serious way in the next two decades and pick up all the pieces. In fifty years, Africa will be, for all practical purposes, a Chinese colony.
I suspected that to be the case. What a mess!
