I'm hoping this all comes out OK, but am fearing a major catastrophe. I have been to Oaxaca several times. For me, it has been a magic place.
I am so sad over what's happening. There are beautiful people there. Pray for them.
I would not blame the govt for taking armed action. These people are basically in rebellion.
I don't think they will go in shooting, though. This is not the government that massacred students in 1968. The faction that did that are the leftist "protestors" of the last several months.
BFLR; thank you StJacques for the excellent translation.
Thank you for your hard work on translating... You are truley a FR asset.. I was disapointed that one of the FR Mods decided to move this in the Blog section... this is very relevent news, and deserves wide dissimination as many of us FReepers are following the situation in Mexico closely.. I see now that it has been moved to Front Page... keep up the good work.. and Please keep me on your ping list so I don't miss any of your relevent posts... FYI.
An American friend who lives in Mexico City just sent me the following:
Yesterday I was at a party with someone who just returned from Oaxaca.
He told me that violence is much worse then being reported with the
anarchists using explosives and Molotov cocktails. He told me what may have
started out as a legitimate labor dispute has now turned into a revolution
to overthrow the state government. The state is too weak to do anything
about it and Fox has been in the "don't bother me with any problems" mode
for the last few months. He also told me about an incident that happened
last week; it seems a (famous) radio reporter name d La Rocha went to
interview some government official in Oaxaca including the governor. It
seems during an interview with 2 senators one from the PRI the other from
the PAN, PRD gunmen burst in on the interview, beat La Rocha (I think that
was his name) on the head and kidnapped the 2 senators. They were really
after the governor, when they realized their mistake they let the senators
go.
Next week these violent maniacs will be coming to D.F. They will definitely
have protection (and probably financial support) of the local D.F.
government. You can be sure they be marching under the under the banner of
better pay for teachers but their real cause will be promoting AMLO. I think
AMLO is in for a lot more attention.
