"I would have an interest in knowing more about the PRD-PAN Convergencia and how the natl election will effect that in the future."

I'm going to sit down and watch my Saints play in a couple of minutes, but I'll get back to you on this question later today.

Criminals are making the money with drugs (libertarians drool).
We all know what a disaster most world is (mostly related to drugs and slavery in some form IMO) and they see us as a threat of ending their theifdoms just as the Islamic Radicals know they are in a fight for their survival right now.

We start to prosecute people who tunnel and add 700 miles of fence and it is going to get more tense in Mexico IMO.

I would also like to add into the mix the fact that the drug cartels have started killing Mexican prosecutors, which I believe is going to provoke a stern reaction from the Mexican government. Arellano Felix, the head of the Zetas, and a couple of other kingpins have gone down recently so it might get bloodier before it gets cleaner.

I don't know that the Mexican government is as well financed as the drug cartels.

Unless there is huge regional (turf) conflicts between these drug cartels, even the Mexican military could have troubles dealing with them.

If cartels are to the point of working out who has what and if they are organized in agreement, it will be darn tough for the government to do anything.

Can you imagine how many in the government are on cartel patrols.

An American friend who lives in Mexico City just sent me the following:

Yesterday I was at a party with someone who just returned from Oaxaca.
He told me that violence is much worse then being reported with the
anarchists using explosives and Molotov cocktails. He told me what may have
started out as a legitimate labor dispute has now turned into a revolution
to overthrow the state government. The state is too weak to do anything
about it and Fox has been in the "don't bother me with any problems" mode
for the last few months. He also told me about an incident that happened
last week; it seems a (famous) radio reporter name d La Rocha went to
interview some government official in Oaxaca including the governor. It
seems during an interview with 2 senators one from the PRI the other from
the PAN, PRD gunmen burst in on the interview, beat La Rocha (I think that
was his name) on the head and kidnapped the 2 senators. They were really
after the governor, when they realized their mistake they let the senators
go.

Next week these violent maniacs will be coming to D.F. They will definitely
have protection (and probably financial support) of the local D.F.
government. You can be sure they be marching under the under the banner of
better pay for teachers but their real cause will be promoting AMLO. I think
AMLO is in for a lot more attention.

All of those paragraphs are his, by the way.

The incident your friend told you about is what was reported in the editorial I translated in the last thread.

". . . But this time it happened last Sunday in the course of the program of Denisse Maerker on Televisa's Channel 4. There, the leader of APPO, Flavio Sosa terrified the audience with his unconvincing explanations of the assault at the hotel where they attacked Ricardo Rocha and [Oaxacan] state legislators and with his rhetoric fully assimilated within that of AMLO. . . ."

I'm guessing that the word your friend sent suggests that the incident is getting fairly wide airplay in Mexico.

Your friend is seriously misinformed. ROCHA, not "La Rocha" is a well known political writer for "el Universal". He was in the hotel when a group came in looking for the Governor. The people he was interviewing were NOT kidnapped (they did, however, hide in their bathrooms and use their cell phones to call hotel security), and Rocha was roughed up.

Two protesters were injured -- one wounded by gunfire by the Governor's security people, and one hit with a piece of rebar. The people attacking the protesters appeared to be military men in civilian clothing, according to one of the Congressmen who was trapped in the hotel.

This is very similar to what happened at the end of Diaz Ordaz' administration when plainclothed military units infiltrated student demonstrations, caused violence and justified a crackdown on demonstrators.

Not that I think Fox is that devious -- or stupid. It does look, though, like the Federal government is playing hardball, and forcing all sides to negotiate. The APPO, the teachers' union, the Church, the state government and a citizens' group led by internationally known artist Francisco Toledo will be talking Monday. Wednesday is the "deadline" for paramilitary police units to dislodge protesters and dismantle barricades.

There is really no question that this governor stole the election in 2004, and there is every indication that a settlement will be reached, leading to the governor's resignation and an "interim governor" being appointed to serve until the 2008 congressional elections.

From the Governmental Secretary's viewpoint, Ruiz should face a recall referendum, not be forced to resign. See http://www.eluniversal.com.mx/notas/378372.html for Abascal's statement. You can also check out my post #31 on another thread for a discussion of that article.

And by the way, I do not argue with your contention that Ruiz stole the 2004 election. His corruption in electoral politics and much more is absolutely astounding in my opinion.

I'm going to be posting another translation on Mexican military movements in Oaxaca very shortly.
