LONDON (AFP) - British Prime Minister Tony Blair will be questioned by police within weeks as part of the investigation into alleged "cash for honours", the Daily Mail newspaper reports.
The report comes after British media said that Ruth Turner, a senior aide in Blair's Downing Street office, was questioned as part of the same inquiry.
Officers are probing claims that wealthy individuals were nominated for seats in the House of Lords, Britain's unelected upper chamber of parliament, after offering financial backing for the ruling Labour Party's 2005 general election campaign.
The main opposition Conservatives and third party Liberal Democrats have also become involved in the so-called "cash for honours" row.
The Mail quoted police sources saying that Blair will be questioned "within weeks".
And Scottish Nationalist lawmaker Angus Macneil, whose complaint triggered the probe, told the paper he had been told this week by police that the inquiry could go on until December.
"Any politician who thinks it (is) all going to be swept under the carpet should be very worried. I get the impression that they will question the Prime Minister," he said.
But the Financial Times newspaper said that police planned to submit a final report on the allegations by the end of October to the Crown Prosecution Service, the body which decides whether to take the issue to court.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman told AFP he could not comment on either report.
Earlier this month, Lord Michael Levy, Blair's Middle East envoy, tennis partner and Labour's chief fundraiser, was also questioned over his alleged role and bailed by police.

Good riddance to both, but it won't happen just yet.
We can't deny that Tony Blair is in trouble, but I hope that his political problems shift to Gordon Brown, as soon as possible. After Blair, we need Cameron (Conservatives) to win.
Hehe... This'll be fun!
