CA: 'Pay as you go' for transit projects - Another view: No on 1B
Sacramento Bee ^ | September 26, 2006 | Michael N. Villines

Those in support of Proposition 1B would have us believe that bonding is the only way our state can raise the money we need to achieve our desired transportation goals. They would say this because lawmakers don't have the spine for hiking taxes to pay for these projects.

Let's set the record straight. The majority party in Sacramento rarely meets a tax increase it can't support. The fiscally responsible members of the Legislature understand that higher taxes and bonding are not the only way to fund transportation projects. The belief that bonding is needed completely ignores the fact that during the last two budget cycles, California has benefited from a growing economy with an increase of $23 billion in additional revenue.

Unfortunately, this increase in revenue was spent on expanding government without any substantial increases in transportation expenditures.

(snip)

Raising taxes or putting the state into greater debt is not the Holy Grail we should seek to solve our infrastructure problem. We don't have a revenue problem; we have a spending problem.

The answer is controlling spending. We need to rein in how much money goes to programs that only serve to expand government and refocus our commitment to the funding of infrastructure priorities with the majority of these increased revenues. This "pay as you go" approach is a long-term solution to a long-term goal, unlike excessive levels of borrowing, which are a short-term solution with damaging long-term impacts.

(snip)

We should demand that our children and grandchildren have a transportation system that meets the needs of the 21st century. That's why the citizens of California should vote No on Proposition 1B. Force the Legislature to produce a transportation infrastructure plan for our future that is responsible, realistic and result driven.

Do you "pay as you go when you buy a house", put a few bricks towards it every year? When do you think you will have a house that way?

CA roads are the worst in the nation and continue to deteriorate. They need to be fixed now.

Read the Villines article, FO. He clearly discusses that issue. You are being hoodwinked to give more funds to the lefty liberal big-spending legislature so they can use existing taxes on more social programs.

Vote for 1B and Promote Socialism!
