Personally I agree with all wearing ID badges at such events, if I remember correctly at the world cup in Germany the coaches (team managers) all wore them.
It does quickly identify who people are and what areas they are allowed to be in and to answer your question I am sure there are a lot of Irish who would not recognise him as I am certain there are many English people who would not recognise him as well.
