As I understand it, this is a controversial issue. I often see accounts that minimize the "Islamic destruction" episode, and point out various other acts by Christians and perhaps Romans or somebody else.
I have always tended to take these as quibbles, and I retain a deep suspicion that it was the Moslems who really did it in, but I don't really know.
I do know that when the History Channel shows Egyptian wall paintings, it often appears that the faces have been deliberately obliterated, and it seems like we are supposed to presume that this is due to "the ravages of time" without having to be told, but I always assume - assume, I say - that the Moslems did it.
