Yangon, Myanmar (AP) - Myanmar's military government expressed thanks to Russia and China for rallying against the U.N. Security Council's move to formally place the country on its agenda.
In a five-page rebuttal, Myanmar said it appreciated China and Russia for having "stood steadfastly on the side of Myanmar."
It commended China and Russia as the exceptions that "do not want the U.N. Security Council being misused as a tool in the interest of a big nation."
Washington had long called for Myanmar to be formally entered into the council's agenda to investigate its government and domestic policies.
The council came to a vote of 10-4.
Myanmar had garnered international criticism for its treatment of political opponents including prominent pro-democracy leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.
The UN opposition was led by China and Russia along with Qatar and Congo. They reasoned that Myanmar has made developments in addressing its problems and doesn't register as a threat to international security.
Well its been crystal clear for the past few years (even a decade or two) that Russia is MORE than happy to 'sell' security council 'protection' with anyone that will pay to do business with them.
They tend to not be the most trustworthy, but the fact they are seeking business with pariahs of the international community, they have plenty of leverage.
They also usually end up 'selling out' their 'partners' when push comes to shove with 'abstaining' when all possible stalling tactics are exhausted or the heat gets too high on a particular issue. But they are "good" for years of delay if nothing else.
And for the MiGs, the ships, the roads, the airfields .... and ... the nuclear technology .... wait until that one rears up its ugly head!
As I recall the Russian wants to set up a nuclear plant and the Chinese got their investments as well.
You got it, maybe it’s the economy factor that both Russia and China remains silence on Myanmar’s crisis, for now.
That’s correct. Since they’ve already got the DPRK and Iran kicked off with nuke development, it’s time to develop additional places to outsource nuclear proliferation to. We outsource software, the SCO outsources nuke proliferation. Actions speak louder than words.
