Environmental factors could play a large role in kids' attention deficit

CHICAGO - About one-third of attention deficit cases among U.S. children may be linked with tobacco smoke before birth or to lead exposure afterward, according to provocative new research.
Even levels of lead the government considers acceptable appeared to increase a child’s risk of having attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, the study found. It builds on previous research linking attention problems, including ADHD, with childhood lead exposure and smoking during pregnancy, and offers one of the first estimates for how much those environmental factors might contribute.
“It’s a landmark paper that quantifies the number of cases of ADHD that can be attributed to very important environmental exposures,” said Dr. Leo Trasande, assistant director of the Center for Children’s Health and the Environment at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.

Probably has more to do with ADHD being diagnosed more freely these days then in an actual increase in ADHD.
Lead was removed from gasoline and most paint quite some time ago as well.

Yup, gotta ban more smoking, cause it causes everything... But wait, there's ten times the lead exposure and twice the smoking exposure in China for children, and they've a tremendously big population of children - wonder how many ADHD cases there are over there...?
Every single time a scientist links something to another, it just don't play when you increase the sample size. And because scientists are so fixated on the cause of the week, they ignore this, time and time again.
Am I saying that every kid needs to suck a pound of lead while someone blows smoke in their face? Absolutely not. But I'd suggest that turning off the television and sending the kids to play outside is likely a better cause to focus on.
Wouldn't it be funny if it turns out to be thirty second commercials that is the biggest contributing factor...?
I'm not even sure what constitutes an ADHD diagnosis. Isn't it pretty subjective in a lot of cases?
I think most attention Deficit disorder is because of parental attention deficit.
A good switch used at the right time will cure most of it. IMO.
Gee, I wonder what everyone did when I was growing up. There was smoking all over the place and I can't name one child with ADHD back then. Hmmmmmmmm........ You know I don't remember kids doing drugs. I don't remember them doing a lot of things they do today like wearing clothes that leave nothing to the imagination.
Oh yes, I see they are bringing back ddt after that crazy loon of woman declared it should be banned and possibly hundreds of thousands of people died as a result of her stupidity.
I'm with you! I never heard of this when I was younger. I don't put much stock in this at all.
Exactly when my son first entered school they diagnosed him (without a doctor of course) as ADHD. They suggested we see their doctor to confirm this. I suggested they stick it up their Ass.
We moved schools (a smaller one / private with 10 students per class).
Fast forward about 1 yr I asked his new teacher about my son being ADHD and she looked at me like I was insane.
At present my son is top of his class in nearly all subjects.
It's a sick sick system.
They should really check to see if they can link it to baloney....Maybe they can use this "study" as a basis.
That's my youngest son. He would get it the first time the teacher said something and by the time she repeated it 20 times he was bored. He dropped out of school at 16, finally got his GED and at 23 has enrolled in a good community college and loves it. He's doing very well now.
That child is now a Doctor. Their other child will soon be taking the NYS Bar Exam. And these are both women!!
Someone needs to take the bull by the horn and Frank and his wife did just that.
Tell the teachers and behaviorists to go to hell. They've made the norm so narrow....that no one is normal.
My son's school only let them out for 20 minutes a day.
Also, as you said the curriculum is awful. When my son was doing math with a calculator, that was the last straw. He's homeschooled now, (tossed the calculator.)
I smoke tobacco in a lead pipe. Am I in trouble?
