NEW YORK (AP) -- Nobel Peace Prize recipient Elie Wiesel and actor George Clooney on Thursday urged the international community to help end the conflict in Sudan's Darfur region.
"The situation in Darfur is not getting better, it is getting worse," Clooney said in a statement. "We need the international community to commit all of its resources to bring an end to this extraordinary suffering. The critical hour for Darfur is now."
Wiesel and Clooney are scheduled to address U.N. Security Council members at an informal briefing on Thursday afternoon. The briefing has been organized by the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity, which recently set up a Darfur Commission of Nobel Laureates, and is being hosted by U.S. Ambassador John Bolton.
Sudan is resisting attempts by the U.N. to take over an African Union peacekeeping force that has been unable to stop the violence in the western Darfur region.
Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir has said the change would violate the country's sovereignty and has warned that his army would fight any U.N. forces sent to Darfur.
Wiesel called on Bashir to "stop obstructing international efforts to help the victims in Darfur."
"There is no choice but to act in defense of defenseless people. Those who commit genocide must not be allowed to hide behind national borders and claims of sovereignty," the Nobel Peace Prize winner and Holocaust survivor said in a statement Thursday.

Clooney is right on this, but then again, you know what they say about broken clocks?
That headline scared me. I thought that somehow George Clooney had gotten a Nobel prize.
But I guess he feels the helpless Kurds weren't enough reason to invade Iraq.
how many million has he contributed?
But they are only killing Christians in Darfur? I thought they didn't count. Now if Muslims were being killed, especially by say, Israel, the UN would be up in arms and demanding immediate action!
Weasel and Looney Clooney. Nuff said
Don't forget Jimmah also received Nobel Peace Prize.
Maybe the Egyptians will go in there? /sarcasm
George who?
This is how the Hollywood celebs entertain people these days...by jumping on the bandwagon about--what--seven years to late!! The movies they make these days are all bombs. George Clooney...toilet bowl...which holds higher expectations???
What a minute - does Sudan pose an immediate threat to the US? Of course not. Why are we then going to get involved?
Too bad Bubba didn't get more involved with Sudan back when Osama was stinking up the place. He did bomb their aspirin factory, though.
I am so glad the Hollywood celebs are here on earth to raise awareness to all the horrible situations in the world because none of us little people pay any attention.......(sarc)
He said it was terrible that the U.N. let the 1994 killings in Rwanda happen and urged the U.N. to "restore its honor" by taking action in Darfur.
I'm sure Mr. Weisel does, but does Clooney understand just WHO did the killing in Rwanda, and who is doing the killing Darfur? In both instances, it was Muslim dominated governments and their armies who were killing Christians who were black Africans. They want Africa to be Muslim, and will kill everyone else, either by direct murder, or by starvation from not allowing emergency aid to get to those people.
Did he identify vicous, murdering bands of thousands of young men led by evil clerics claiming to act in the name of Allah as the cause of the suffering?
If not ,he is simply whispering "smoke" in the face of a forest fire.
Could you be more specific, Mr. Clooney? Who comprises this "international community" with available resources?
I demand Clooney eat a worm, skip recess and fix my dishwasher.
Does that mean you take the UN seriously? It's just a show, including Clooney's appearence; you watch it and amuse yourself.
(No more Olmert! No more Kadima! No more Oslo! )
