First ethanol pump in Florida up and running
Bradenton (FL) Herald ^ | Sept 14, 2006 | DAVID ROYSE

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Drivers with vehicles that can use ethanol-blend fuel were able to buy it in Florida for the first time Wednesday when a gas station here became the state's first to sell E-85.

Gov. Jeb Bush was the first to use it, pumping the corn-based fuel into an SUV with the hope that eventually it could help lessen dependence on foreign oil, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, provide an economic boost to farmers and maybe even blunt high pump prices.

The promotion of alternative fuels has been the centerpiece of Bush's energy policy - and state officials said the governor would be riding in a vehicle that can use E-85 within a couple weeks.

The fuel can only be used in flex fuel vehicles, or FFVs. It would damage regular engines.

The Russians are pumping all the oil they can. They need the money and the more the price falls the more they will pump.

Saudi Arabia used to be the biggest producer of OIL. Russia passed them last week.

NO Saudi did not cut production... the Russians incresed production.

The price of oil is falling like a rock.. and will keep falling. The last thing the Russians or Saudis want is for us to develop alernative fuels. If that means very low priced oil that is what we will get.

I guess this is a big deal in Florida but we've had it around here for about 30 years. It's sometimes cheaper than regular gas because of gov subsidies. (central Illinois)

How long before a wrong-tank incident kills a lot of cars? Would you know right away or will there be enough delay so it is near impossible to prove?

Just another politically popular, but nonetheless, dumb idea doomed to failure.

You are right. It seems to work everywhere but Hollywood. They seem content to serve the liberal customers only.

Saw E85 in Greenville, SC last week . Only $.05 cheaper/gal. That means ethenol costs a hell of a lot compared to gasoline .

I read where you only get 1/2 to 3/4 as many mpg with E85.

Probably true . Alcohol combustion can't come close to the explosive energy of gasoline .

That will change...

Nope, it won't change. You cannot pump ethanol or e-85 through the national pipline system, it has to be trucked by tanker. Money loser #1.

Ethanol has fewer BTUs per gallon than gasoline, therefore e-85 will always deliver poorer mileage than gasoline. Money Loser #2.

Brazil used sugar cane to make their Ethanol. Corn is much less efficient at producing Ethanol per farmed acre than either sugar cane or sugar beets. Money loser #3.

Ethanol costs more per gallon than gasoline even before factoring in the BTU differences, therefore Ethanol needs to be subsidized and/or mandated to be competitive with gasoline. Money loser #4.

ADM is the number one producer of Ethanol in the US. Substituting one big business (oil) with another (agribusiness) doesn't help out poor joe farmer. Money loser #5.

But Ethanol makes us feel better because we can say "stick your oil where the sun don't shine, Arabs!"

BUT: We can inexpensively make refinery-like FLOODS of ethanol from natural gas and water! Ask me how.
