At least six people have been killed in a suicide attack at the funeral service of an assassinated Afghan governor.
Our South Asia correspondent, Peter Lloyd, says Abdul Hakim Taniwal was the highest-ranking Afghan official to die in renewed Taliban violence, and his funeral service drew cabinet ministers and many other senior officials.
Several witnesses say the explosion happened as an official delegation from Kabul was leaving the ceremony.
According to a local hospital, dozens of bystanders were injured, some seriously.
Taliban militants have claimed responsibility for the governor's death in a suicide attack on Sunday.
He was the first governor killed in several assassination attempts across the country since the fall of Taliban in 2001.
Mr Taniwal became an Australian citizen after moving to Melbourne as a refugee, but moved back to Afghanistan in 2002.
U.S. military investigates leaked photo (of 190 Taliban militants at funeral/cemetery. MOAB Time!) (AP on Yahoo 9/13/06)
NBC-TV claimed that U.S. Army officers wanted to attack the ceremony with missiles carried by the Predator drone, but were prevented under rules of battlefield engagement that bar attacks on cemeteries.
Sounds like the Taliban has no problem blowing up funerals. Kind of ties in with the one we did not bomb. We should have bombed it.
Hmmmmmmm
Why we won't win the WOT.
In such a case, international statute ought to say that the US can do pretty much anything. No rules for them. No rules for us.
But our media would have a field day.
Satan has taken a solid grip of these radical "Religion of Peace" nutjobs. God have mercy on their souls.

The leaked story was because of frustration with a ignorant policy. It was the TRUE act of a whistleblower.
The opportunity may never present itself again (or they may surround themselves with 12 wives and 30 children) but clearly we are "honoring" a tradition that holds no sacred trust in their hearts or minds. Bombing the Taliban at a funeral would not sour our position. If they take offense, it is because we are "outsiders" and even "kufir" (infidel).
My first thoughts exactly. There are no rules for the enemy, why do have to hold back?
You connected the same dots I did, just a little quicker...
Laura Ingraham mentioned this on her show today. I searched for an article (and I liked this better than the only other one about it on FR).
You beat me to it.
I understand the reasoning behind our ROE's on this point, but, that said, there ALWAYS has to be a mechanism for an exception to the rule that depends on the circumstance.
Yes, we don't want attacks at funerals or in cemetaries to be everyday occurrences, carried out against low value targets. But the occasional operation, against a high value target, with a great probability of success, that MUST BE A GO.
Maybe now that this prob has surfaced TPTB will realize that they have to be able to grant exceptions to the ROE's in appropriate circumstances---and then create a way that is not full of red tape so boots ont he ground can get an exception quickly.
Then again, maybe they will make it a habit to meet in cemetaries or at funerals, knowing the ROEs prohibit attack.
So we should surprise 'em with an exception to the ROE with their name on it.
Laura Ingraham suggested we broaden this policy to grant them a security detail at such events.
And of course, there should be NO hold on shooting the motorcade LEAVING the funeral.
