Nation questions terror war as 9/11 recalled

LONDON (AFP) - Britain, which suffered its own terror carnage last year, has marked the fifth anniversary of the September 11 attacks in low-key fashion, amid growing questions about the country's leading role in the war on terror.

A new poll indicated that only seven percent of Britons believe that the United States and Britain -- Washington's key ally in the military campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq -- are winning the conflict against global terrorism.

Nearly a quarter -- 22 percent-- believe the two countries were losing the war, according to the YouGov survey for Sky News television, commissioned to mark the anniversary of the attacks in New York and Washington. Prime Minister Tony Blair famously pledged to stand "shoulder to shoulder" with US President George W. Bush after the attacks, and controversially joined him in the March 2003 invasion of Iraq, sending British troops to the frontline.

But skepticism about the stance was expressed in a high-profile letter sent to Blair last month, two days after a series of arrests over an alleged plot to blow up transatlantic airplanes.

"It is our view that current British government policy risks putting civilians at increased risk both in the UK and abroad," said the letter, signed by leading Muslim groups and other politicians.

Well, fine. Let's just all crawl under the bed and wait for the big bang when the US and Britain are blown to bits.

On a day such as today who gives a tuppeny tinkers toss what the Muslims think.

All the press seems out to undermine our resolve. To pu this agenda on today of all days is despicable, manipulative and dishonorable. I am mad.

As thumper said "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all".

67 Britons died on 9-11. Are they being remembered?
