Coleman says he'll be part of U.N. delegation [Fierce UN critic]

Senator Norm Coleman, a fierce critic of the United Nations, says the Bush administration is appointing him to serve as a congressional delegate to the world body.

White House officials would not comment Thursday, saying it has not yet officially made the appointments. Amy Call, a spokeswoman for Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, confirmed that Frist recommended Coleman for the delegation.

The Democratic choice is Sen. Barbara Boxer of California, her office said. Boxer is an outspoken liberal who has been a fierce opponent of John Bolton's nomination as U.N. ambassador, which is up for renomination now.

"I am very pleased at the prospect of being a congressional delegate to the United Nations General Assembly, especially at this point in our history, as we face daunting global challenges," Boxer said in a statement.

Each of the major parties recommend a lawmaker as its representative in the official delegation to the world organization. The president's staff makes the nominations official, and the Senate approves them.

Once approved, the two will represent Congress as part of the U.S. delegation, starting this month.

In congressional investigations, Coleman found abuses in the U.N. oil-for-food program, which was aimed at allowing President Saddam Hussein's former Iraqi government to sell oil for food and medicine during punitive international sanctions against his government. Coleman has urged U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan to resign because of abuses in the program.

Coleman said he might meet with Annan as a U.S. representative.

"It's not personal," he said. "My concerns are not personal concerns. They are concerns about the ability of the U.N. to be effective in dealing with the situation in Lebanon, with Iran, in Darfur, with North Korea."

Brenden Varma, a spokesman for Annan, said it was up the United States to choose who would serve

Good move Mr. President, Senator Coleman is perhaps the fiercest UN critic in the Congress.

The UN headquarters in New York needs to be moved off U.S. soil, perhaps to somewhere in the Third World. The U.S. needs to form a new world body formed from nations who share the same ideology, economic system, and human values.

Well ... this should be good for about eight or ten 1 week fillers per year.

All the lamestream media will pick up on any foolish disagreement and wall-to-wall it for about a week at a time. Who knows? They might even be able to pull off a Valerie Plame moment or two.

As an asides .. a friend of mine who was at my house about a week ago saw on FOX that Tony Blair would probably step down next spring. That surprised him .. he has rabbit-ears TV. Today he told me .. he still has heard nothing about it on the lamestreams.

Boxer is one of my Senators and her only redeeming feature is her "in the mud IQ."

I'm not sure the Democrats can embarrass themselves from within their own party.

They also somehow missed the story about Mexico's election being certified, reducing the chances for a civil war directly to our South. Katie and company *did* manage to find space for pieces about Tom and Katie's offspring, however. Anybody hoping to be kept informed by watching network news is on a fool's errand.

Well, you have to remember she is from Marin County in No. CA. There are a lot of uppity snobs living in that region. And then of course there is the city by the bay. Need I say more?

Like it or not, the UN is here to stay. I think we ought to keep our friends close, but our enemies closer. Keep the UN where we can watch it. Putting it in some 3rd world place would give them even more opportunity to cause mischeif.

I disagree .. everyone uses our liberty and laws against us .. to try to take us down .. Do you really think Kofi would jaunt around the Middle East in his little boy, soft voice .. if he new he resided in .. oh ... France? Germany? Africa?

There is no where on planet Earth where a collective of dictators and tyrants would be tolerated for any longer than a month or so.

Those parking tickets would never happen ... let alone go unpaid.
