House Race Hotline Update: Huff Over Huffman

straw.gif An unusual GOP primary is taking place 9/12 in AZ 08, where the NRCC is attacking front-runner Randy Graf while the DCCC is rooting for him. Graf has a loyal base of support because of his hard-line stance on immigration. But many GOPers fear he's unelectable in the general. Instead, they're spending over $100K to back state Rep. Steve Huffman, who fits the moderate mold of retiring Rep. Jim Kolbe (R).

But there are signs that Huffman is running a lackluster campaign. Despite a big fundraising advantage and Kolbe's endorsement, he remains down in polls. His treasurer was snooping around his challenger's ex-wife's home, prompting the Tucson Weekly to revoke their endorsement of him. And unlike ex-state Sen. Gabrielle Giffords (D) and Graf, he kept his seat in the legislature during the campaign - allowing the DCCC to hammer him for missing recent votes on border security.

Dem primary frontrunner Giffords is looking strong for the general, regardless of who wins the GOP primary. And if Huffman's the nominee, he'll need the support of immigration hawks this fall. But if the NRCC openly opposes the conservatives' favored candidate, can the cmte. expect those voters to turn out for Huffman in the general?

According to the blog-o-sphere in Arizona's 8th District, the story about Huffman's treasurer snooping around Hellon's house goes further than what's been reported. Implicated along with Huffman's treasurer is a man by the name of Todd Clodfelter. He's the guy that is accused of setting up the website where Huffman's treasurer was posting the peeping tom photos and he's a subject of the same lawsuit filed against Huffman's treasurer. What hasn't been reported except on the blogs is that Clodfelter also set up the official Huffman campaign website domain and still personally owns the huffman2006.com domain. Further, Clodfelter's personal website is on the same server as the Huffman campaign website. There's more info on this at the Arizona 8th blog. Look at http://arizonaeighth.blogspot.com/2006/09/huffman-peeping-tom-connection.html and http://arizonaeighth.blogspot.com/2006/09/huffman-stalker-investigation-now.html to see it all laid out. It demonstrates that it is improbable that Huffman's statements were true when he denied any knowledge of his treasurer's stalker-like harassment against one of his opponents. Now, based upon this new information, someone needs to ask Huffman, "Truthfully, what did you know and when did you know it?" But given all the lies that Huffman has been telling in his smear campaign against frontrunner Randy Graf, no one should be surprised when he is less than truthful in his response.

The NRCC/NRSC spend more time attacking Repubicans (Graf, Laffey, Schlesigner, etc.) than they do attacking Democrats. Their RNC-Country Club establishment is falling, the Club for Growth is the future.
