Homeowner, intruder wounded in shootout (SC)

A Hopkins man shot one of two intruders at his home on Dry Branch Way early Friday in an exchange of gunfire that also left him wounded, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

Both intruders face charges, but homeowner Alonzo Williams, 29, won’t be charged, Sheriff’s Department spokesman Lt. Chris Cowan said Friday.

“We believe he shot him because he was in fear of his life and he was inside his residence and he was protecting himself,” Cowan said.

Both Williams and the wounded intruder, Gregory Weaver, 21, are being treated at Palmetto Health Richland for non-life-threatening injuries, Cowan said.

At 2:36 a.m., Williams was asleep and heard someone kicking on his front door, so he grabbed his gun and began firing at a man who returned fire, according to an incident report.

Williams was struck on the chin, right shoulder and left hand. . The intruder was hit multiple times, Cowan said.

The intruders left in a dark-colored vehicle headed toward Weston Road, Williams told police.

On Bluff Road, deputies spotted a dark-colored Chevrolet Impala that they pursued to the parking lot of Palmetto Health Richland and arrested Weaver and 25-year-old Donald Richardson Jr. of Hopkins.

Each is charged with assault and battery with intent to kill and first-degree burglary. Richardson also was charged with driving under suspension, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, and failing to stop for blue lights and siren.

The suspects are also accused of breaking into Williams’ car, deputies said.

Cowan said deputies don’t believe Williams knew the suspects.

The shootout occurred on a country road that has about three dozen small homes.

Tiffany Brown, a resident of the road for six years, knows Williams as a neighbor and said, “He’s a nice person. I’ve never known him to be in any trouble.”

Brown lives with her mother, three sisters, niece and nephew and said the incident is scary, particularly if the house was targeted at random.

“It has you concerned because you don’t know what somebody’s out there planning to do next,” she said.

Richardson has been arrested before. His criminal record includes convictions in 2004 for accessory after the fact to murder and in 2002 for possessing a stolen vehicle, State Law Enforcement Division records show.

Pauline Martin, who has also lived on the road for six years, described the neighborhood as peaceful and quiet and said the incident is “really sad.”

She hopes it will be a wake-up call for her son to not leave valuables in his new car. But she also hopes it will be a wake-up call to neighbors.

“In our neighborhood, we see and wave at our neighbors, but they never talk to us. If you’re more neighborly, your neighborhood is a lot more safe. You share information about what you see, what’s going on.”

If Williams was shot then he most definately was justified in shooting back and should not face any charges should the intruder succumb to his wounds.

We just had an incident here in Oregon where a Nurse (older gal) came home from work to find an intruder (who has a long record including attempted murder) and she strangled him to death.

LOL We hang em high in the PNW.

The news showed an old interview of this gal talking about how abusive patients are becoming and how she has been assaulted on her job several times.
Looks like in her private life she is not going to put up with that business. : )

Both of them are at the same hospital. Wouldn't it be awkward if they're sharing the same room.
