"That's not going to happen," snaps the president of the United States, leaning across his desk in his airborne office. He had been saying that he hoped to revisit Social Security reform next year, when he "will be able to drain the politics out of the issue," and I rudely interrupted by noting the polls predicting Ms. Pelosi's ascension.

"I just don't believe it," the president insists. "I believe the Republicans will end up being--running the House and the Senate. And the reason why I believe it is because when our candidates go out and talk about the strength of this economy, people will say their tax cuts worked, their plan worked. . . . And secondly, that this is a group of people that understand the stakes of the world in which we live and are willing to help this unity government in Iraq succeed for the sake of our children and grandchildren, and that we are steadfast in our belief in the capacity of liberty to bring peace."

Take the Palestinian elections that elevated the terrorist group Hamas to power. "I wasn't surprised," he says, "that the political party that said 'Vote for me, I will get rid of corruption' won, because I was the person that decided on U.S. foreign policy that we were not going to deal with Mr. Arafat because he had let his people down, and that money that the world was spending wasn't getting to the Palestinian people. . . . They didn't say, 'Vote for us, we want war.' They said, 'Vote for us, we will get you better education and health.' "

Then he shouldn't be suprised when idiot Americans believe the Ned Lamonts of politics and change the face of Congress.

The rat's bull shiite house of cards is coming down. The idea that he was ahead was built on both phony and disingenuous polls. Many conservatives "sent messages" through the polls. Many polls had questions that were designed to give the rat the response he was paying for.

All of this aside the rat will lose again in November because he is basically out of step with American values.

Bush is in denial. The Republicans (and our country) are in serious trouble this time. The Republican majority in Congress has abandoned basic conservative principles on domestic issues (McCain-Feingold, Immigration, etc.) which will depress Republican turnout. On the issues that drive "Independents" (Iraq and the economy), Bush's failure to wait until labor day to rebut two years of partisan attacks from the Democrats and the media has been sure idiocy! Compare Clinton's PR efforts versus Bush's. While Bush has principles, Clinton makes Bush and the Republicans look like lightweights when it comes to politics.

I completely agree. I don't share his optimism on this issue and I think the 'Rats will gain seats in Congress. Maybe not enough to take over, but it looks like they will certainly gain seats. I run into people every day who complain about the economy. Can you believe that? If you can't make it in this economy the problem lies with you, not the economy. It's hard for me to understand the notion that some folks have that this is a bad economy, especially when it comes from folks who lived through the Carter years.....

I have never seen Paul Gigot be rude. He is usually very polite and gracious. I really miss him on the political wrap-up on the "NewsHour with Jim Leher" on PBS on Friday nights. That is the only 10 minutes of the show that I ever watch and Mark Shields is getting so insufferable that I can hardly stand to watch it at all any more. Paul was even polite to him while at the same time challenging him much more often than David Brooks.

It is mostly fear of another bubble. The press has constantly been talking down the economy and Wall Street thrives on bad news. They make money buy or selling.

Even if that happens I'll point out that the Republicans have been running the House and Senate and White House for six years and have done squat about cutting spending, fixing Social Security, stemming illegal immigration, or reducing government. Why on earth should we expect that to suddenly change, especially in light of the fact that even if the GOP retains control of both Houses it will most likely be with reduced majorities? Sometimes I see comments like this coming out of the President's mouth and I wonder if anyone is home up there.

Dubya and Rove are pretty smart cats.
They know how they've got an nearly unassailable ally: The Insane and Dangerous
Democratic Party.

This allows them to get away with leaving borders open, invasion of
the country by identity thieves and social-security fraudsters,...
and they know folks will still vote Republican.
Because the alternative is noticably worse.

The Electorate is hypnotized by the lies and deceit of the Liberals. Bush Lied, Bush Tortures, Bush breaks the Law, that is what America has heard loud and clear in the MSM and from the Rats so that is what has its focus. Its like the RICO act the Prosecution throws out so much stuff that the Jury who is mulling it over has no time or inclination to investigate it themselves and therefore just starts to agree with it or assumes there is so much there that someone has to be guilty of something. That ignorance in the electorate is the 10 percent that will make the difference in most races in November. I just hope that this recent push by the President is not too little too late.
